Summary of Crush It! (Gary Vaynerchuk)
Book Abstract
It’s now so easy to build a career around any topic you’re passionate about that you owe it to yourself to give it a go. The spread of the Internet combined with the availability of the tools of the social media revolution means the cost of building an online community around any niche subject you can think of has fallen dramatically. As a result, even obscure subjects now have the potential to command advertising attention as billions of dollars in advertising moves online.
To succeed in the current business environment, your basic approach should be:
“True success – financial, personal, and professional – lies above all in loving your family, working hard, and living your passion. In telling your story. In authenticity, hustle and patience. In caring fiercely about the big and small stuff. In valuing legacy over currency. Social media is an important part of it for now, but maybe it won’t always be. These concepts, however, are forever, no matter what the next business platform or social phenomenon turns out to be.”
– Gary Vaynerchuk

PASSION
It’s time to live your passion – to do something you’re totally pumped up about and enjoy. Instead of just earning a living doing something you tolerate, harness your passions and do something great. The tools to do that are available now. Measure your success by how happy you are and not by how big your business is or how much money you re making.
Everyone talks about how dramatically the Internet is changing the business world but most of the time, those discussions center on big business. All of that is true but the tools which are delivered via the Internet can also be adopted at a personal level as well. It’s now feasible to build a business which can generate wealth using nothing more than passion, hard work and all of the social networking tools of the Internet era.
As more and more people migrate their social lives to networking sites like YouTube, Flickr, Tumblr and Twitter, this is going to become increasingly attractive to advertisers of all shapes and sizes. Radio, newspapers, magazines and television are all losing viewers or subscribers but advertisers and companies still need to spend money to move their products and services. The inevitable result will be advertisers will have to move their expenditure from where they have advertised in the past to where people will be in the future.
“Advertisers and companies need to spend money to stay alive, so why shouldn’t they spend it on you? By building a personal brand using social media networks, you’re practically doing them a favor. Since the only investment it takes to use these sites to grow a business is ridiculous amounts of time and hustle, these platforms are open to whoever has got the chops to get in the game. That’s you, right?”
– Gary Vaynerchuk
