Book Presentation: Exporting America by Lou Dobbs

Book Abstract

While Lou Dobbs is known more for his financial and business opinions, and not necessarily his political views, he has recently stirred up the political nation with his aggressive effort to put a stop to the exporting of American jobs overseas. In Exporting America, Dobbs lays out his arguments against this practice by trying to debunk many of the myths regarding American outsourcing and free trade.

Dobbs primarily blames Corporate America’s greed for this problem, but he doesn’t stop there. He attacks politicians, both Democrats and Republicans, for not standing up against the corporate lobbyists and allowing this practice to continue despite the negative results. Exporting America is a call to arms to save the American Dream.

About the Author

Lou Dobbs is the anchor and managing editor of CNN’s Lou Dobbs Tonight. He is a columnist for Money magazine and a contributing editor to U.S. News and World Report. He also publishes his own financial newsletter, The Lou Dobbs Money Letter.

Summary of Exporting America (Lou Dobbs)

Assault On Middle-Class Americans

The odds are that during the past recession, you or someone you know was affected by corporate layoffs and the loss of a job. It’s a painful experience that can have a devastating effect on individuals and families. In some cases, these layoffs can cripple entire towns and communities. And layoffs related to outsourcing have long-term effects on these communities because companies pulling out take their taxes with them (of course, the people who lost their jobs due to the company’s leaving are also unable to pay taxes because they’re no longer getting paid to work).

These scenarios are playing out all over America:

Employment in the American auto industry has dropped by 200,000 jobs over the past four years, while imports of Chinese auto parts have doubled.America has lost three million manufacturing jobs over the past three years. At least 750,000 American jobs were lost as a direct result of NAFTA.Tens of thousands of high-tech jobs have been shifted overseas. While apparel manufacturing was once a thriving business in U.S. factories, today, 96 percent of clothing production is done outside our borders.
