Book Presentation: Extreme Competition by Peter Fingar

Book Abstract

In Extreme Competition, Fingar analyzes how technology such as the Internet has freed one of the most valuable commodities of all time: information. Now that consumers have access to data formerly concealed from them by corporate interests, they are empowered to be better, smarter shoppers. In the process, companies are having to relearn how to compete by building better, faster, and more reactive business systems that leverage time zones, labor costs, and resource locations to produce more competitive products for the truly global marketplace that confronts them and tests their mettle.

Fingar examines how businesses are evolving in the 21st century and offers strategies for what businesses need to be doing to survive in this new global economy.

Summary of Extreme Competition (Peter Fingar)

Knowledge as Business Capital

Historically, knowledge has been a liberating force for the common man. Gutenberg’s printing press did not simply make books easier to produce in quantity, it gave Martin Luther the means to challenge what, at the time, was an increasingly venal and greedy Catholic Church hierarchy that had been charging money for “dispensation” or the forgiveness of sins. No longer backed by the Church’s undisputed authority, monarchs began to lose power as well.

Tim Berners-Lee’s Internet is the 21st century’s Gutenberg press. Information has been freed from corporate and government control and what people are learning is fueling a revolution in society at large. As a result, hierarchical business and governmental structures are not responsive enough to the quicksilver whimsy of consumer needs and wants.
