America is the greatest nation on earth but it is in trouble. It’s time for us as citizens to have a new and urgent national conversation about the proper role of government in the life of Americans. We must renew and refresh our collective appreciation for the genius of this nation’s federal system of government which is quite brilliant when it works the way it is supposed to.
Government clearly works best when it is close to the people rather than administered in some faraway place. The states are the critical component of this nation’s system of government, not the federal entity. It’s time to challenge the establishment politicians who have empowered Washington at the expense of the states. By doing this, we will reclaimour liberty. It’s time for all of us to rely on ourselves and our families rather than on the government.

About the Author
Rick Perry has served as governor of Texas for ten years. He previously served as the Texas Agricultural Commissioner, as a member of the Texas legislature and as lieutenant governor. He has served in the leadership of the Republican Governor’s Association for five years and is a former Air Force pilot and Eagle Scout.

Americans have fed more people, helped more and given more to improve the lives of people around the world than any other society history has ever known. This is a land of limitless opportunity but our way of life is increasingly coming under threat because economic power is steadily and corrosively being concentrated in Washington D.C. rather than being spread across the states as was originally intended. In 1960, the government of the United States spent $509 per person. In 2011, that figure will surpass $11,500 per person and it won’t stop there. Simply put, we are today overtaxed, over regulated and fed up with having our own government preach to us how to live our own lives.
For too long, the majority of Americans have sat idly by while the political establishment has waged a blatant assault on the sound constitutional principle of limited government. Those who are waging this assault are in two distinct camps:
