Book Presentation: Hide and Seek by Charles Duelfer

Book Abstract

In Hide and Seek, long-term intelligence expert, Charles Duelfer, reveals the full, behind-the-scenes story of how and why sanctions and diplomacy in Iraq were doomed to fail. He explains the long and complex relationship between the United States and Iraq, a relationship filled with mistakes, misunderstandings, and misjudgments. Duelfer asserts that the “thankless spiral of mutually assured antagonism” did not have to be. Without an embassy in Iraq and no trade in or out, the U.S. intelligence community didn’t really have a good sense of the conditions in Iraq. In 2004, Duelfer presented the Iraq Survey Group (ISG) Report to Congress. The report showed that the administration’s assumptions about weapons of mass destruction were “flat-out wrong.” Hide and Seek is the story of how this report came to be.

About the Author

Charles Duelfer served as the deputy chairman of the United Nations weapons inspection organization from 1993 to 2000. He also led the Iraq Survey Group, a CIA-led team in charge of searching for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. The resulting report, which was published and presented to Congress, is commonly called the Duelfer Report.

Summary of Hide and Seek (Charles Duelfer)

Knowledge is Costly

In November 2004, Charles Duelfer was in Baghdad to investigate Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction (WMD). The purpose of the study was to ferret out the truth to a complex question: what was the state of Iraq’s WMD programs? One of the last remaining issues was the alleged movement of WMD to Syria before the U.S. invaded in 2003. Duelfer and his deputy got into an armored vehicle for a day of investigations.
