Book Presentation: Meltdown by Katrina vanden Heuval

Book Abstract

America’s economy is in a meltdown. Banks have failed, foreclosures are sweeping the housing market, and stocks have suffered their worst losses since the Great Depression. Faced with a complex and spiraling crisis, the government has poured billions of taxpayer cash into a bailout with no end in sight.

At every step of the way, The Nation, America’s oldest weekly magazine, has tackled the most urgent questions facing the country’s leaders and its citizens. Meltdown draws together nearly twenty years of the best of their coverage of the financial crisis and explores what steps President Obama and his new administration must take to ensure a more secure future for everyone.

Summary of Meltdown (Katrina vanden Heuval)

Introduction

The American economic system is at the epicenter of a global financial meltdown. Banks are insolvent, financial institutions have failed, stocks have plunged, and the housing market is in a freefall. At the same time, unemployment is soaring and the credit system is frozen. Meanwhile, the public is learning that the architects of our unfolding catastrophe rewarded themselves with lavish bonuses as their firms failed.

The federal government is spending billions of taxpayer dollars in an attempt to save the financial system. In essence, taxpayers are footing the bill for decades of irresponsible financial practices and policies. The laissez faire brand of capitalism that got its start with Ronald Reagan has proven to be an unjust and unsustainable model that contained the seeds of its own destruction.
