Book Presentation: Molly Ivins by Bill Minutaglio and W. Michael Smith

Book Abstract

Molly Ivins was one of the best-known and most influential journalists in American history. She’s been compared to Will Rogers, Mark Twain, Ambrose Beirce, and even Lenny Bruce. She was also a fastidious self-chronicler, saving anything she deemed to be important. At the height of her career, she began giving it all away to the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas in Austin.

In Molly Ivins: A Rebel Life, the authors attempt to outline Ivins’ roots and show the fascinating path that led to her singular American presence.

About the Author

Bill Minutaglio is a professor of journalism at the University of Texas and author of several books, including First Son: George W. Bush and the Bush Family Dynasty. W. Michael Smith is a journalist and was Molly Ivins’ researcher and assistant for six years.

Summary of Molly Ivins (Bill Minutaglio and W. Michael Smith)

General Jim

Molly Ivins’ father, James E. Ivins, was born and raised in the greater Chicago area to a less-than-prominent family. Jim Ivins was drawn to an idealized notion of another age, a time when self-discipline was valued above most things. He worked to put himself through college at the University of Wisconsin and later law school. As the United States was moving toward World War II, he married Margaret Robbie Milne.

Margaret Robbie Milne was born into a well-to-do family that had settled in Chicago. Her father was wiped out by the Depression, but then dutifully began reassembling his wealth. Margaret went to Smith College and she and Jim moved to St. Louis after getting married, where their first child, Sara, was born.

As war escalated, Jim joined the Coast Guard and was assigned to the USS Gallup. He moved his family to Monterey, California and it was there that his second daughter, Mary Tyler Ivins, was born on August 30, 1944.
