Book Presentation: Party Crashing by Keli Goff

Book Abstract

Party Crashing is Goff’s explanation of why the black vote is quickly losing its predictability, especially with younger black Americans. As blacks become more particular, race has moved from being the factor influencing party affiliation to one of many factors and sometimes not a factor at all. While their parents and grandparents remain loyal supporters to the Democratic Party, this generation is showing signs of departure as they assert their independence, challenge old notions, shake off labels, and focus on priorities completely different from the generations before them.

Goff explores the reasons behind this shift and what it might mean for both the Democratic and Republican parties. She also offers insight into the costs of not responding to the political identities of this generation as well as the benefits to whichever party is willing to adjust its strategy and focus to meet their needs.

A Seismic Shift

If you were asked to name the voice of the new shift in black American political thought, you might not think to name comedian and actor Chris Rock, but that would be the correct answer. In Never Scared, Rock’s most recent stand-up film, he talks about how Democrats take advantage of blacks and how Republicans disregard blacks. He also chastises anyone who blindly follows without questioning and looking at their options. Rock is not just describing his own opinion, but a movement of young black Americans asserting their political independence.

While their parents are overwhelming registered as Democrats, a 2001 study from the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies showed that 30 percent of black Americans ages 18-35 identified themselves as political independents and similar findings in later years have confirmed that more than one-third no longer feel the need to conform to traditional party labeling.
