About the Author

ANDREW SOBEL is a business consultant and executive educator. He has worked with clients like Citigroup, Xerox and Cognizant and many others. He has published numerous articles on client loyalty in the New York Times, Business Week and the Harvard Business Review. He is also the author or coauthor of Clients For Life, All For One, Making Rain and Power Questions. He is a graduate of Middlebury College and Dartmouth University.

JEROLD PANAS is one of the world's most prolific fundraisers. He is executive partner of his own fundraising consulting firm, Jerold Panas, Linzy & Partners. Founded in 1968, his firm has carried out fundraising programs generating more than $11 billion in contributions for more than 3,500 client institutions including universities, museums and health care centers. He is the author or coauthor of fifteen books including Asking, Mega Gifts and Power Questions.

In today's world, it's easier than ever to contact people but hard to make lasting connections. Everyone is busy. To connect with people in order to build power relationships, there are eight power laws you need to be using.

1. Have great conversations

To build power relationships with other people, you've got to engage in two-way conversations which do more than showcase how much you know. You've got to restrain your urge to try and impress others and instead turn every conversation into a true give-and-take.

You do this by:

Pausing often to listen to what others are saying and then respond to their questions.Periodically asking listeners "How do you feel about this?" or "What do you think?"Carrying out a reality check – pause and ask: "From your perspective, what's the most important issue we should be talking about right now?"
