Summary of Racing To Win (Joe Gibbs)
Book Abstract
Success in anything in life is never an accident. It has to be planned for and worked towards – you need a game plan that incorporates everything needed to make it work. A good game plan has six key elements and a strong foundation:
Note especially the foundation for a good game plan is spiritual. Joe Gibbs is passionate about his belief in God and in the relevancy of the Holy Bible, and that colors everything he thinks and does. It also impacts on each and every element of his game plan for success.
“Today, I’m convinced that true success is impossible without a strong spiritual commitment. If you have a thriving relationship with God, the race is already on. You’re just waiting for this race to end and the heavenly race to begin. Remember, life is tough, but it can also be tremendous! Race hard. Follow the game plan. Race to win!”
– Joe Gibbs
“My strongest foundation for success has not been physical or material. Rather, it has been spiritual. And that’s not a cute cliché or a thinly disguised attempt to trick you into converting to my style of religion, either. Fact is, all the ‘religion’ in the world will never lead you to success in this life or the next. I’m telling you straight out: The greatest factor in my success has been my personal relationship with God. You can take it or leave it. I’m no theologian; I’m just a coach. But I know a good game plan when I see one, and I’ve found the best plan of all in the Bible. And I’m speaking from experience when I say this stuff works. You may be an accountant, a writer, a homemaker, a schoolteacher, a football coach or an expert in some other field; but whatever you do for a living, God wants you to do it well. He wants us to be great at our occupations, not just average, and he has given us the gifts and the help to make it happen. My advice is to check out God’s game plan in the Bible. Find out what God says about achieving success in your vocational calling.”
– Joe Gibbs

Foundation: Your Own Personal Spiritual Beliefs
The first step in developing a game plan is to define and clarify your own spiritual beliefs. Until you make a personal decision where your heart lies, your game plan will be incomplete and lacking power.
The five key components in laying a solid foundation based on your personal spiritual belief system are:
Decide on who your coach will be.The most important person on any team is the coach. Unless somebody is in charge and making the decisions, everyone will just run around in circles and get nowhere. A good coach will have a system for the best way to maximize everyone’s efforts. Thus, you have to make up your mind whether you’re going to plot your course using:
Society’s plans and ideas.Your own best judgement. The ideas from a higher source – like God or the Holy Bible.Find other people to work with you can count on.If you care passionately about whatever line of work you do, that attitude will attract like-minded individuals who are committed to winning. This is important because great achievements require the efforts and input of other people. Nobody can do everything that’s required for themselves. You need to link up with people you genuinely like being with.
Understand success is always a team effort. In every life, there are numerous challenges. When that happens, it’s great to be surrounded by people who share your goals and beliefs, and who will help you get back on track again and moving forward. Success in life demands your efforts be multiplied and enhanced by the efforts of your team members. Smart people surround themselves with friends, associates, co-workers and others who they can count on.
