Book Presentation: Rumsfeld by Andrew Cockburn

Book Abstract

Donald Rumsfeld is widely viewed as the man who pushed the United States into the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Cockburn delves deep into Rumsfeld’s past through investigative journalism and interviews with Washington insiders to understand this calculating and adversarial man who has stopped at nothing to gain control and push his agenda.

Rumsfeld’s “aggressive ambition has long been matched by his inability to display genuine leadership or accept responsibility for egregious error.” He has had a profound impact on the country and world, and will for many decades to come.

About the Author

Andrew Cockburn is a writer and speaker on defense and national affairs. He is the author of five books including Out of the Ashes and Dangerous Liaison. He has written for The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and National Geographic.

Summary of Rumsfeld (Andrew Cockburn)

Making History

On September 11, 2001, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was receiving his usual CIA briefing at the Pentagon when he got the report that an airplane had hit the National Mall. Rumsfeld immediately turned and set off down the hallway to survey the damage. Despite security guards’ protestations, Rumsfeld made his way to the section of the Pentagon that had been hit by terrorists.

He pushed a gurney with an injured person on it, apparently oblivious to the nature of the attack or of his vital role in getting to a secure location and conferring with top officials to discover what was happening.

After September 11th, “the legend” of Rumsfeld’s actions grew. His decision to go immediately to the crash site gave him an image of courageous leadership. The truth, however, reveals a different sort of leader. A conversation between Cheney and Rumsfeld at 10:30 a.m. (after all the hijacked planes had crashed) shows that the two men had little idea of what was actually going on.
