Book Presentation: Saving Israel by Daniel Gordis

Book Abstract

The Jewish State must end, say its enemies, from intellectuals like Tony Judt to hate-filled demagogues like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Even average Israelis are wondering if they wouldn’t be better off somewhere else. A country which once restored hope to Jews all over the world now feels itself slipping. Increasingly, Israelis wonder how much has really been accomplished and whether they ought to persevere. Can Israel win the next military war for survival, whomever the foe? Can Israel defuse the demographic time bomb of a growing Arab population? Can Israel, a country that’s come so far and sacrificed so much, keep up the will to fight? Daniel Gordis is confident his fellow Jews can renew their faith in the cause, and in Saving Israel, he outlines how.

About the Author

Daniel Gordis is Senior Vice President and a Senior Fellow at the Shalem Center. He is also a columnist for the Jerusalem Post and has written articles for The New York Times, Tikkun, and Forward. His books include: Coming Together, Coming Apart and If a Place Can Make You Cry.

Summary of Saving Israel (Daniel Gordis)

Introduction

Israel is beleaguered and besieged on all sides. Most of the Arab world, of course, calls for the destruction of Israel. But Israel is also increasingly isolated from and castigated by the international community. In fact, even Jews within Israel have begun to question the viability of a Jewish state. Never in the nation’s history have the existential challenges for Israel been greater.

The state of Israel is vitally important for the Jewish people. During WWII, six million Jews were slaughtered as part of Hitler’s Holocaust. Today, the state of Israel encompasses a similar number of Jews, a people who find themselves in the crosshairs of an Iranian regime intent on wiping Israel off the map.
