Book Presentation: Second Chance by Zbigniew Brzezinski

Book Abstract

Second Chance is Brzezinksi’s assessment of how three presidents, Bush Senior, Clinton, and Bush Junior, performed as global leaders and the impact their achievements and mistakes have made on America’s standing in the world. In addition to dissecting the sins of omission and commission, he analyzes how each man’s character, intellect, and organizational skills affected his ability to lead.

Brzezinksi highlights the great accomplishments each made, but also shows how their lack of long-term thinking or ideology caused them to make mistakes that would have a long-term effect on America and the world. Using lessons from almost two decades of global leadership, Brzezinksi also speculates as to what might have been had these men acted differently and offers recommendations as to how America can regain its global stature in today’s era of global awakening.

About the Author

Zbigniew Brzezinksi was National Security Advisor to President Jimmy Carter and is currently a counselor and trustee at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He is also a professor of American foreign policy at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University and has authored several books.

Summary of Second Chance (Zbigniew Brzezinski)

The Challenge of Global Leadership

The coronation of the U.S. President as the first global leader in modern times did not happen on a specific date, although it was as a result of the end of the Cold War. The president simply began to act as the global leader, the American media proclaimed him as such, and foreign leaders deferred to him. The previous world leader, Great Britain, was battered by two prolonged and draining world wars. No one had the economic strength and military power of the United States.
