Book Presentation: Shadow War by Richard Miniter

Book Abstract

Shadow War aims to answer three key questions concerning bin Laden, terrorism and the United States. Where is Osama bin Laden? Why hasn’t there been an attack on the United States since 9/11? And has President Bush’s War on Terror been successful?

While the mainstream media portrays President Bush as a failure in the War on Terror, Miniter presents a dramatically different story of Bush’s successful battle against terrorist threats. Miniter believes the major media has missed many of the biggest developments and successes in the War on Terror and in Shadow War, he delivers the unreported story of how the War on Terror can be and is being won.

About the Author

Richard Miniter is an investigative reporter and author of the New York Times bestseller, Losing bin Laden: How Bill Clinton’s Failures Unleashed Global Terror. Miniter was a member of a celebrated team of investigative reporters for the Sunday Times of London. Among the teams’ credits was a series of articles on the secret war between Bill Clinton and Osama bin Laden. Miniter also wrote for the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal’s OpinionJournal.com. He has appeared on CNN, Fox News, C-SPAN and MSNBC to discuss al Qaeda and global terrorism.

Summary of Shadow War (Richard Miniter)

Isolating bin Laden

Voice traffic bearing bin Laden’s vocal fingerprint collected from satellite phones in 2002 and 2003 prove that bin Laden is alive. Upon discovering that the CIA and U.S. military had identified bin Laden’s satellite phone signals, he switched message transmission methods. Through sympathetic web sites, bin Laden leaves coded messages embedded in news stories to coordinate his followers. Because this activity is ongoing even today, the general assumption is that bin Laden is still alive and active in 2004. [Editor’s note: the recent video of Osama bin Laden surfaced shortly after Shadow War’s publication.]

Another proof of bin Laden’s existence is the coordination transpiring between Yemeni, Saudi, Egyptian, Syrian and Sudanese members of al Qaeda. This coordination not only demonstrates bin Laden’s existence, but also his command control. Normally, these disparate groups are quarrelsome and don’t work well together. The fact that they are cooperating to further larger plans is a key indicator of bin Laden’s existence and the threat he still presents.
