Book Presentation: Supreme Chaos by Charles Willis Pickering

Book Abstract

Supreme Chaos is Pickering’s observation of the chaotic and broken judicial confirmation process. The emerging culture wars have created a power struggle between the Right and Left and their target is the judicial system. He sees a battle to maintain the intent of the constitution and live by the rule of law against the liberal activists who want a ‘living constitution,’ one that changes with the changing moods and views of activist judges.

Pickering chronicles how special interest groups have manipulated the legislative process to undermine our Founding Father’s ideal. Using his own experience, as well as many other examples, Pickering shows how integrity and ability are no longer the qualifications for judges. He asserts that activist groups want activist judges who will do for them what they can’t get Congress to do. Pickering believes it is changing our judicial system for the worse and degrading the civility of our society in general.

About the Author

A retired federal circuit court judge, Charles Pickering, Sr. is currently a senior counsel with the law firm of Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz. President George W. Bush appointed him to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in January 2004. He received a “well qualified” rating from the American Bar Association, the highest rating available, but his commission expired in December 2004 when the Senate adjourned without confirmation.

The Problem

The judicial process is broken and badly in need of being fixed. What used to be a respectful legislative proceeding has now become a partisan conflict that leaves the reputations of nominees battered. The character assassinations by special interest groups and the media they fool into believing them have degraded the quality, independence, diversity and integrity of the American judiciary.
