Book Presentation: Take It Back by James Carville & Paul Begala

Book Abstract

In Take It Back, Carville and Begala diagnose why Democrats have been unable to connect with voters, despite the fact that the majority of Americans are dissatisfied with President Bush. “Democrats have failed at the basics: defining their message, attacking their opponents, defending their leaders, inspiring their voters.” Many middle-class and working-class voters chose Republicans, even though their economic policies conflict with voters’ self-interest, because they connect with Republicans over values. Republicans have managed to define “values” issues that are symbolic and divisive: abortion, gay rights and gun control. To regain the political playing field, Democrats need to expand the discussion of values and demonstrate that the party’s values are in the interest of the majority of Americans. Take It Back is a “call to arms” for Democrats to take back their party and renew their political message and strategies.
