Therefore, learning how to motivate and channel the efforts and actions of others – that is, becoming a leader – is an essential prerequisite of success. To maximize your success, use your leadership skills to involve others in getting big things done. In practice, this always involves three steps:

Summary of Taking People With You (David Novak)

1. Get your mind-set right

The first step in leading people and achieving big goals is to pause and think through exactly what you’re trying to achieve. This is usually a matter of figuring out the answers to three questions:

What’s the single biggest thing you could achieve which would grow your business?Who do you need to influence or take with you to be successful? What perceptions, habits or beliefs do those people have which you need to build on, change or reinforce?

One of the basic principles of marketing is to influence someone, you’ve first got to get inside their heads and learn how you can solve the customer’s problems in ways which will benefit your business. This is the same principle. To take your people towards the promised land of a big and audacious goal, you need to have insights into the minds of those you are trying to lead. Once you know how they think, you can then reframe your goal in ways which will get people on your side.

“The first job of a successful leader is to have an idea of where you want to lead people. I start with a straightforward question: What’s the single biggest thing you can imagine that will grow your business or change your life? The answer that you come up with is what I call a Big Goal, by which I mean something more than just small improvements or modest growth. It’s not very bold to do just marginally better than the year before. Setting the right goal is the key to achieving success, and leaders often fall short in this area by not aiming high enough.”

– David Novak

Your Big Goal must be a quantum leap forward rather than a marginal improvement on the status quo. Take your current target and double it and see what kind of possibilities and challenges that brings to mind. Or take your current timeline and halve it. Figure out what you’d need to do to hit that compressed timeline. That’s how you come up with a Big Goal which is so ambitious you have to get others involved in achieving it.

Once you have your Big Goal clearly in mind, it will then be a matter of figuring out who your target audience will be in order to recruit the people you will need. Develop a people map and include all stakeholders you will need to influence:
