Book Presentation: Tell Me How This Ends by Linda Robinson

Book Abstract

After a series of disastrous missteps in its conduct of the war, the White House in 2006 appointed General David Petraeus as the Commanding General of the coalition forces. Tell Me How This Ends is an inside account of his attempt to turn around a failing war. Robinson conducted extensive interviews with Petraeus and his subordinate commanders and spent weeks with key U.S. and Iraqi divisions. The result is a book that tells the full story of the Iraq War’s endgame, and lays out the options that will be facing President Obama when he takes office in January 2009.

Summary of Tell Me How This Ends (Linda Robinson)

Introduction

In 2006, the Iraq War seemed lost. Shia and Sunni factions seemed on the verge of civil war and the American public had grown discouraged to the point of hopelessness. The Iraq War, already a defining event of our time, was frequently compared to America’s failure in Vietnam. In 2007, however, the Bush administration initiated an ambitious new counterinsurgency strategy led by General David Petraeus, which has dramatically improved security for ordinary Iraqis and turned the tide in America’s favor. It is far too early – and conditions in Iraq are way too fragile – to say the worst is over. But, it already seems clear that the accomplishments of General Petraeus and U.S. troops have earned a special place in the annals of American history.
