David Kuo came to Washington wanting to use his Christian faith to end abortion, strengthen marriage, and help the poor. He reached the heights of political power, ultimately serving in the White House under George W. Bush as second in command at the president’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. It was a dream come true: the chance to fuse his politics and his faith. However, his experience was deeply troubling. He found himself helping to manipulate religious faith for political gain. He believed his Christian values, and those of millions of Americans, were being corrupted by politics.
It is time, Kuo argues, for Christians to take a temporary step back from politics, to turn away from its seductions. Tempting Faith is a political and spiritual memoir as well as a heartfelt plea for a Christian reexamination of political involvement.
For three years, David Kuo served in President George W. Bush’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. This assignment was the culmination of years with the conservative/religious movement within the Republican Party. Kuo worked for a number of conservative leaders including John Ashcroft, William Bennett, Jack Kemp, Bob Dole, and Ralph Reed. Among the positions held by Kuo were policy advisor and speechwriter. Kuo is the Washington editor of Beliefnet.com.
William Wilberforce was a British lord in the 1700s who was inspired by a serious accident to begin integrating his religious beliefs into his political activities. He began advocating policies that would help the poor, promote public education, and eliminate corruption in Parliament. John Newton, a former slave trader, underwent a similar religious transformation. Newton and Wilberforce became allies in making England a better place.
When David Kuo learned about these two men, they became his role models.
