Book Presentation: The Assault on Reason by Al Gore

Book Abstract

The Assault on Reason is an analysis of how the politics of fear, secrecy, cronyism, and blind faith have combined with the degradation of the public sphere to create an environment dangerously hostile to reason. In this book, former Vice President Al Gore explains how the public sphere itself has evolved into a place hospitable to reason’s enemies. His goal is to make people more aware of the forces at work on their own minds and to lead all to an understanding of what can be done, individually and collectively, to restore the rule of reason and safeguard America’s future. Drawing on a life’s work in politics as well as on the work of experts across a broad range of disciplines, Gore offers a manifesto for clear thinking.

About the Author

Al Gore has served in Congress, the Senate, and as Vice-President of the United States. In 2000, he lost the closest election in America history when he won the popular vote over George W. Bush, but fell short in the all-important Electoral College. Since leaving office, Gore has called attention to the issue of Global Warming, winning an Academy Award for his documentary An Inconvenient Truth, and penning the bestseller of the same name.

Summary of The Assault on Reason (Al Gore)

Introduction

Shortly before George W. Bush took the United States to war against Iraq, America’s longest-serving senator, Robert Byrd of West Virginia, stood alone on the Senate floor and admonished his colleagues for failing to seriously debate the pros and cons of going to war. Today, many Americans wonder what has happened to our country.

We cannot blame President Bush alone for the impoverished state of America’s political discourse. Rather, our entire political and cultural environment, the market place of ideas, if you will, appears to be more superficial and less reasoned than in prior times. For example, regular media frenzies focusing on celebrities like Brittany Spears, O.J. Simpson, and the late Anna Nicole Smith seem to reflect the fact that entertainment is being conflated with the news.
