The election of Barack Obama in November 2008 was supposed to usher in a new era of hope, optimism and bipartisan politics. Instead, it has provoked extreme and unparalleled anger on the far right which has dominated vital national discussions and moved ideas from the right-wing fringe into prime time news.
What’s generating this political perfect storm condition are behind-the-scenes political operatives who are now combining old-time populist outrage with digital age phobias to generate a wave of resentment many have ridden straight to the bank. The combination of a number of disparate events like the election of America’s first African-American president, the economic recession, the rise of social networking and even the phenomenon of Glen Beck and other political entertainers/commentators has created an angry right-wing political movement which poses a legitimate risk to the future of democracy in America. If left unchecked, the widespread paranoia of the radical militia groups, the Tea Party, the pro-gun zealots and groups like the Oath Keepers may fuel a wave of anti-government violence which could potentially consume America. It’s time to give some serious thought and reflection to where our democracy is heading.
Will Bunch is a senior writer at the Philadelphia Daily News. He is also a senior fellow at Media Matters for America. He is the author of Tear Down This Myth: The Right-Wing Distortion of the Reagan Legacy. He writes a daily political blog at www.attytood.com. Mr. Bunch shared the Pulitzer Prize for spot news reporting in 1992 when he worked at New York Newsday.
On June 30, 2009, seventy-year-old Republican Congressman Mike Castle – who coincidentally was a direct descendant of Ben Franklin – was confronted by a middle-aged woman who spoke of all kinds of dark conspiracies and threats to the Republic. Her rant made its way from YouTube to the Drudge Report, then the Rush Limbaugh Show and finally on to NBC Nightly News. It seemed to give voice to the fears of loud people from the right of the political spectrum across the nation. Less than a year into President Obama’s term, it appeared a new and more paranoid style of politics had come into fashion. It’s almost as if the far-right minority (who lost the election) are the figurative tail which is wagging the American dog rather than the other way around.
