Book Presentation: The Disposable American by Louis Uchitelle

Book Abstract

The Disposable American is an account of layoffs in America, their questionable necessity, their overuse and their devastating impact on individuals at all income levels. Despite the drawbacks, layoffs are accelerating and as they do, the notion of job security is being destroyed. Americans, in sum, have acquiesced to layoffs.

Uchitelle explains the ways in which layoffs are counterproductive, rarely promoting efficiency or profitability in the long term. He asserts that our acceptance of this practice encourages wasteful mergers, outsourcing, the shifting of production abroad, the loss of union protection and wage stagnation. While recognizing that in today’s global economy some layoffs must occur, the author argues that government should step in with policies that encourage companies to restrict layoffs and should generate well-paying jobs through public spending on necessary infrastructure to supplement the present shortfall. Uchitelle also offers several solutions for lowering the number of layoffs seen today.
