About the Author

Joel Fleishman is Professor of Law and Public Policy at Duke University. He has served as President of the Atlantic Philanthropic Service Company and was on the U.S. program staff of Atlantic Philanthropies. He currently serves as a trustee of the John and Mary Markle Foundation, Chairman of the Board of the Trustees of the Urban Institute, and Chairman of the Visiting Committee of the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

When Warren Buffett in 2006 announced that he would donate $31 billion to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the entire world noticed – not only because of the magnitude of the gift, but also because of his decision not to memorialize himself by placing it in a foundation bearing his name. It also called attention to the world of foundations, attention which is long overdue.

There are thousands of foundations actively working for the betterment of society in the United States and around the world. Foundations fund public broadcasting, provide financial aid through Pell Grants, and support emergency services. At the most basic level, what foundations do is very simple.
