Book Presentation: The Global Achievement Gap by Tony Wagner

Book Abstract

Our country’s schools are dangerously obsolete and are increasingly failing to produce students who are prepared to be critical thinkers and problem-solvers. With an emphasis on memorization of facts and performance on multiple choice tests, we are not teaching the skills of the 21st century. In contrast, schools in India and China are better equipping their students to get jobs in the new global economy.

In The Global Achievement Gap, Wagner examines the profound disconnect between what employers are looking for – critical thinking skills, creativity, communication skills – and what U.S. schools are providing our students – passive learning experiences, test preparation, and uninspired lesson planning. Wagner shares what he’s discovered in walk-throughs of dozens of schools and recommends ways to motivate the next generation to learn and succeed in today’s workforce.

Summary of The Global Achievement Gap (Tony Wagner)

Introduction

Any discussion of the state of the American educational system needs to start with a few stark facts:

The U.S. high school graduation rate is about 70% of the “age cohort.” We lag behind Denmark (96%), Japan (93%), and Italy (73%).Of those students who finish high school and go on to college, 40% must take remedial courses. It is estimated that one out of every two U.S. students who start college “never complete any kind of postsecondary degree.”A majority of college professors (65%) report that incoming students are not prepared for college.
