Book Presentation: The Original Argument by Glenn Beck with Joshua Charles

Book Abstract

In the 18th century, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay pseudonymously published (under the pen name “Publius”) a series of eighty-five political essays which came to be called “The Federalist Papers”. These essays defined and helped shape the public debate which eventually led to the adoption of the Constitution of the United States. The Federalist Papers also focused on what can be termed “the original argument” – namely, what is the correct balance between the rights of each sovereign state and the federal government?

The central question of The Federalist Papers was: Can man govern himself? Critics suggested good government only ever arose from war or blind luck. The bedrock belief Publius put forward was individuals could peacefully choose to create and then be governed by a central government that was good and wise and therefore the Constitution of the United States should be ratified and enacted in order to make that process happen. The core principles which The Federalist Papers articulate are:

Smaller government makes for better government because it maximizes the liberty of each citizen. It’s vital to know where federal power ends and state power begins, and to maintain this balance.Government must be organized with counterbalancing branches so as to minimize the risk of monarchy. All men are fallible and therefore the only safe route is for all men to rule themselves.Transparency is equally vital – the key to avoiding anarchy is for the citizens to be informed.

Summary of The Original Argument (Glenn Beck with Joshua Charles)

1. Novus Ordo Seclorum: A New Order for the Ages

NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM is a Latin phrase which means: A New Order for the Ages. This phrase is a permanent part of the Great Seal of the United States and signifies that America was creating a Republic which ideally would become the envy of every nation on the face of the planet. The Federalist Papers made the case for change away from the then existing Articles of Confederation which had proven to be too weak to be effective. Publius wanted everyone to know the new Constitution being discussed was a new and noteworthy development rather than a rework of an existing model.

“Nothing remains as obvious as the fact that either the new Constitution will be adopted, or the Union will be torn apart. It is therefore necessary to examine the advantages of the Union, as well as the evils and dangers that would result from its disbanding.”

– Publius

The building blocks of this New Order according to Publius were:

Prosperity and national security depend on each other
