Book Presentation: The Right Nation by John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge

Book Abstract

The Right Nation is an attempt by two British journalists, John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge, to explore and explain the conservative nature of American politics at the turn of the 21st century. The authors’ aim is neither to praise nor castigate the conservative movement that they maintain is triumphing over liberalism, but to examine it in an even handed way.

Demographics, upward mobility, and the war on terror are just a few of the factors that the authors believe will work in favor of the conservative realignment that is underway in America. The authors recognize the possibility that conservatives could overreach as liberalism did with The Great Society, but they believe the evidence indicates that liberalism is on the defensive on all fronts and that conservatives are poised to dominate the American political landscape for a generation or more.

About the Author

John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge are Oxford-educated journalists who write for the British based Economist magazine. They have collaborated on four books together on topics ranging from globalization to business management.

The Conservative Ascendancy

The conservative movement is clicking on all cylinders in the United States. At the dawn of the 21st century, conservative ideas are gaining ground while liberals are playing defense. Behind this burgeoning movement is an army of issue-oriented foot soldiers, student activists, and intellectuals, all supported by a vast organizational infrastructure that includes the Republican Party, conservative think tanks and foundations, talk radio and media outlets like Fox News, and Christian churches and religious organizations.

On almost every front the right is out-hustling, out-thinking, and out-organizing their liberal counterparts. The results are increasingly evident: as of 2004, conservatives now control The White House, both houses of Congress, the Supreme Court, and a majority of the nation’s governorships.

Forty years ago, a conservative realignment would have seemed unlikely. The conservative icon Barry Goldwater was defeated in a landslide, Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society was in its heyday, and conservative publications like the National Review were far and few between (and confined to a mostly fringe readership).
