Book Presentation: The Swamp by Michael Grunwald

Book Abstract

The Swamp is the story of the destruction and possible resurrection of the Everglades, the saga of man’s abuse of nature in southern Florida and his unprecedented efforts to make amends. Grunwald offers an in-depth and fascinating historical analysis of the Everglades, illuminating the natural and social history of one of America’s most beguiling and least understood patches of land.

Grunwald also examines the major role politics have played in this fight to destroy and then renew the Florida Everglades. To this day, it remains a major issue in Florida and national politics.

About the Author

Michael Grunwaldis a reporter for The Washington Post. He has won numerous awards and prizes for his investigative reporting, including the George Polk award for national reporting and the 2003 Society of Environmental Journalists award for his reporting on the Everglades.

Summary of The Swamp (Michael Grunwald)

The Natural Everglades

In its natural state, the Everglades ecosystem once blanketed almost all of South Florida, from atop the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes near modern-day Orlando down to the coral reefs off the Keys. It included marshlands, sawgrass, swamps and wildlife as diverse as black bears, barracudas, manatees, alligators and crocodiles, to name only a few.

The Everglades survived the intrusions of Juan Ponce de Leon, who in 1513 “found” and named “Florida”, and Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1564, as well as the residences of the Calusa Indians and, in the 18th century, the Seminole Indians. During the second Seminole War, also known as the Florida War, the Everglades got its first taste of white men, but fought back; U.S. troops spent so much time slogging through wetlands in the Everglades and Big Cypress that their ankles swelled like balloons and gruesome inflammations covered their legs. Although they blamed the tropical disease on “swamp miasmas”, it was mosquitoes that spread malaria, dengue and yellow fever. U.S. troops also suffered from dysentery and tuberculosis.
