Book Presentation: Think! by Michael R. LeGault

Book Abstract

Think! is in part a response to Malcolm Gladwell’s recent book Blink!, which argued for the importance of impulse and intuition in decision-making. By contrast, Think! analyzes the intellectual, social and educational trends in America that have contributed to the diminution of critical reasoning skills. LeGault argues that our feel-good culture in America, which privileges commercialism, instant gratification and complacency, risks losing its competitive edge in the world.

Summary of Think! (Michael R. LeGault)

Don’t Blink, Think!

“Have marketing spin, political correctness, new law, obsession with appearance, and a feel-good culture diminished America’s appetite for the effort and intricacies of learning and applying critical reasoning and factual knowledge?” LeGault is concerned that American cultural tendencies increasingly point to a “yes.” With America’s economic success and place in the world at stake, LeGault diagnoses the social factors threatening American’s capacity for critical thinking

The title “Think!” is a direct rebuttal to a recent book by Malcolm Gladwell, entitled Blink – the Power of Thinking without Thinking
