Book Presentation: Three Billion New Capitalists by Clyde V. Prestowitz

Book Abstract

The United States currently has the world’s biggest military, the biggest economy, the best universities and the strongest financial system. Many do not believe America will face a serious global competitor for at least a generation. In Three Billion New Capitalists, Prestowitz explains why this belief is false.

Prestowitz examines the powerful trends that are shifting wealth and power to Asia and he takes a detailed look at how America will deal with a world in which the dollar is no longer the dominant currency, the United States is no longer the dominant power and people in Slovenia, Singapore and Seattle are all competing for the same work on the same terms. Three Billion New Capitalists is a profoundly unsettling look at America’s and the world’s economic future.

About the Author

Clyde Prestowitz is President of the Economic Strategy Institute in Washington, D.C. He served as an advisor and trade representative during the Reagan Administration leading numerous economic expeditions and negotiations around the globe, including missions to China, Japan, Latin America and Europe. He is the author of five books including Trading Places and Rogue Nation.

Summary of Three Billion New Capitalists (Clyde V. Prestowitz)

Introduction

America’s citizens face an increasing level of competition from the three billion new capitalists entering the global workplace from the developing world. Citizens from China, India and the former Soviet Union have given up their dream of creating a socialist paradise and have instead turned their energies towards competing in the capitalist system their leaders once disdained. These newly minted capitalists are often willing to work longer and harder than their American and European counterparts, and for considerably less pay. Many are increasingly better educated, meaning it is not just low-tech and labor-intensive jobs that are being outsourced offshore. For instance, the software engineers and service providers based in Bangalore, India not only cost less than their American counterparts, they frequently do a better job.
