Book Presentation: Unfit For Command by John E. O’Neil and Jerome R. Corsi

Book Abstract

Unfit For Command has become the most-talked about political book of the year and it has sparked a heated nationwide debate. O’Neill states upfront that the mission of the book is simple, to make sure John Kerry is not elected President because he is unfit to serve as the commander of America’s armed forces. O’Neill contends that Kerry has lied about his actions during and after the Vietnam War in order to advance his political career and he blames the Kerry-friendly media for not presenting the truth to the American public.

The book is organized in a manner that simply presents reason after reason concerning why Kerry is unfit to command America’s military. Nearly every argument O’Neill makes includes quotes from other veterans and/or text previously published in newspapers or government documents.

About the Author

John E. O’Neill served in Coastal Division 11 in Vietnam and took command of PCF 94, John Kerry’s Swift Boat, after Kerry’s departure. O’Neill first faced Kerry in a 1971 debate on the Dick Cavett Show, refuting Kerry’s accusations of rampant American war crimes in Vietnam.

Jerome R. Corsi is a longtime friend of O’Neill’s and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University. He is a specialist on political violence and the antiwar movement.

Summary of Unfit For Command (John E. O’Neil and Jerome R. Corsi)

Debating Kerry

O’Neill’s public rivalry with Kerry began on June 30, 1971 when he debated against the presidential hopeful on the Dick Cavett Show. At the time, Kerry was the spokesman for the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) and many soldiers, including O’Neill, were angry about Kerry’s publicized antiwar statements.

Kerry had previously given a testimony in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee describing war crimes such as rape and baby-killing. In the Dick Cavett Show debate, O’Neill concentrated primarily on the war-crime charges Kerry had made. When he asked Kerry to list any war crimes or atrocities committed in their unit, Coastal Division 11, Kerry named generalities such as harassment and free-fire zones (an area in which one had discretion to fire if an enemy was sighted, without first checking with headquarters). None of these activities would be regarded as a war crime.

Kerry could not offer a single sentence of any atrocity in the small unit of Coastal Division 11 that both he and O’Neill had been members of. The reason he could not describe any atrocities is because there were none.
