Dobbs charges that the Bush and Clinton administrations, along with corporate America and a Congress that is thoroughly beholden to special interest groups and lobbyists, have been waging a war against the middle class. He asserts that the working men and women of America have been abandoned by the administration’s trade and immigration policies, which favor big business and promote outsourcing and off shoring. He faults the administrations for neglecting our health care system, leaving many working Americans uninsured, and neglecting our educational system, which is falling behind globally and leaving U.S. workers unprepared to face international competition and the challenges of high technology. Dobbs calls for wide ranging reforms on trade policy, business, immigration, education, and health care and urges Americans to withdraw support from the parties that don’t represent their interests and instead register as Independents, thus forcing political leaders to respond to their concerns.
Lou Dobbs currently hosts one of CNN’s most popular programs, Lou Dobbs Tonight. He also hosts a nationally syndicated radio program and writes columns for US News and World Report, Money magazine, and The New York Daily News. Dobbs received a degree in economics from Harvard in 1967. He is also the author of Exporting America.
Since our country’s inception, the American dream has long promised the chance of economic prosperity for every American. But today’s society is dominated by the wealthy and politically powerful, and Americans are increasingly divided by what they do and do not have. Today, our corporate and political elites “are not interested in working people. They are dedicated to attaining power and money, and in the process deprive the middle class of economic opportunity, fair wages, and a voice in Washington.”
