Book Abstract

Main Idea

Organizing works just fine when you know where you want to go but you aren’t really sure how you can actually get there. There are, however, times when organizing alone isn’t enough. If you’re uncertain about where you’re heading or if you simply feel it’s time to make changes in your career or in your personal life, then organizing skills are not necessarily going to be helpful. In those situations, you’re better off releasing your attachment to old and obsolete items so you have more clarity and space to move forward. This is where the SHED process becomes helpful.

SHED is the transformative process of letting things go that represent the past. It involves four steps:

Before you get the SHED process started

1. Name a theme for your life moving forward from today into the future

Whenever something in your life stops working as well as it did before, you’re faced with two choices:

You can hold onto your current way of life and try to fix whatever is familiar but broken at the moment. You can elect to make a fresh start and try new things.

Regardless of which of these approaches you ultimately decide to take, you need to concentrate on the bigger picture. You need to decide on a “theme” you want for your future. In this context, a theme is a simple statement which encapsulates the feelings and experiences you’re actively going to seek in the future. A theme is not about what you want to do but summarizes how you want to feel. Or put another way, a theme expresses your “true north” – what you genuinely want to achieve in your personal life or business career.

A good theme will:

Be simple – so you can change it whenever required.Give you permission to say and do what you genuinely want.Be broad enough that it will impact every area of your life.

There are an unlimited number of ways you can define the theme for your life and career. This statement should be a broad strokes phrase or sentence which describes what you want to focus on in your life moving forward from today. For this reason, it’s often helpful to contrast your theme for the future with what you consider to have been the theme you focused on in your most recent past.

To take some examples:

Current theme: “To prove my competence”.

New Theme: “To fulfill my personal commitments”.

Current theme: “To develop my intellect”.

New Theme: “To use my skills to connect at a personal level”.

Current theme: “Safety and security”.

New theme: “To discover new career opportunities”.

Current theme: “To fulfill my parent’s expectations”.

New theme: “To express myself and apply my creativity”.

Current theme: “To make a living”.

New theme: “To build a well-balanced life and career”.

Current theme: “To find my place in the world”.

New theme: “To put down roots and become productive”.

Having a theme as you work through the SHED process gives a renewed sense of excitement and focus. A theme is the vehicle of change you latch on to and ride. You’re not just organizing your life better – you’re working to a plan and heading for some definite destination. That’s helpful.

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you’ve imagined”.

– Henry David Thoreau

“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it”.

– Goethe
