About the Author

Mary Eberstadt is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution. She is also the author of Home-Alone America. She is a Contributing Editor for Policy Review and has previously served as the managing editor of the Public Interest and as the executive editor of the National Interest.

Introduction

America has drifted rightward. This phenomenon raises the question: Why conservatism? After all, a mere generation ago the conservative movement seemed embattled, marginalized, and intellectually spent. Conservatism, of course, is not a monolithic movement, but the success of conservative think tanks, journals, and media outlets has prompted liberals to speak of “the vast right-wing conspiracy.”

One common thread unites most of the conservative voices included in this book: their journey from youthful liberalism to the more mature destination of conservatism. For some, the power of conservative ideas was a catalyzing factor in shifting their political outlook. For others, the liberal lifestyle naturally entailed disillusionment with the left. And for still others, the experiencing of raising children turned them rightward. But without a doubt, the stifling ideological conformity that afflicts the left-leaning academic world has prompted a rightward counter reaction.

Religious belief is a huge factor for many who are drawn to conservatism. The dour atheism and glib attitude towards abortion among many liberals has led numerous conservatives to identify the left as intellectually and morally dissolute. Reading Roe vs. Wade
