Mr. Citrin also is a leading commentator on business leadership, governance and human capital issues. He is the coauthor of Lessons from the Top: The Search for America’s Best Business Leaders. Mr. Citrin is a graduate of Vassar College and the Harvard Business School.

Today, speed has become an obsession. Consumers expect rapid and responsive service. Organizations must act with urgency to gain a first-mover’s advantage while still allowing enough time for thought and reflection. Thus, the first key to success in the future is to structure your business to do everything at speed.

The 10 ways to implement this strategy are:

Either be first to market or be a smart follower.

Smart followers watch others struggle with problems, and then get to the market with their own solution as rapidly as possible. The key to both market leadership and smart following is the ability to make adjustments quickly.

Develop simple, executable business modules.

Many companies are now breaking their business models down into simple pieces, and then finding ways to optimize each piece. Keep everything as simple as possible.

Teach people the real corporate map.

Instead of an organizational chart, show new employees how things really work in the company. Develop a guidebook so new people can get up to speed quickly.

Flatten your hierarchy.

Have, at the very most, four layers between entry-level employees and the CEO. If you need more, restructure the business into smaller business units.

Share the vision.

Evangelize what’s special about your company and where you want to head. Employees need to hear this frequently and repetitively if they are to stay on track.

Measure and then reward speed.

Without encouraging recklessness, measure how quickly things are being done. Then align your incentive system so those who achieve greater speed earn more.
