The Punishment

He was an obnoxious, arrogant and egotistical piece of work and many around the office loathe him.  His name was Nate Phillips, he was 5'7 medium built in stature Chief Executive Officer of the distribution department for fifteen years.  It took years of diligence and under-minding persistence to accomplish his contentment within the company and subsequently, he wasn't the type of man who preferred to be guided by upper management yet, being an upper management leader was his preference and that's what he became.  In any matter, Nate was quite the family man at home, he was a loving director, a great provider, supportive and a firm disciplinarian.

It began when Nate and his lovely girlfriend Veronica had been dating for a year and had fallen in love, they knew they just couldn't live without one another, but it wasn't until he landed this great job in a career with Honeywell when they decided to marry.  They bought a lovely Victorian home in the suburbs of Cambridge Heights where they started to raise a family.  Veronica was the perfect wife, quite humble and benevolent.  She volunteered part-time at the church food pantry to help the needy yet, she was a domestic engineer full time. They now have two children, a sweet and dainty 12-year-old daughter named Chiffon and a very bright and audacious 10-year-old son named Austen.

It was evident that the frigid climate hindered any outdoor activity for amusement, even with 23-inches of snow on the ground in Boston, Massachusetts, Austen felt it was still a good day to play outside.

“No Austen it is entirely too cold out!  You're going to catch a death of a cold out there!  You have enough toys up in your room to keep you occupied for days so why not go upstairs and play!”  His mother insisted.

“But mom, I just wanted to play out in the snow for a little while!  So please, can I?”  He pleaded.

“Go ask your father!”  She instructed.

Austen became silent and scowled.

“Go on and see what he says!  He's in his study!”  She walked away.

“Oh what's the use!  He's not going to let me!”  He stormed off to his room and grabbed his basketball collapsing into his bed.

It was true, Austen had every latest gadget, game or electronic toy you could imagine but weeks without going outsdoors could drive any young boy crazy as he continued to pout.

Suddenly the doorbell rang, “Who could that be?”  He wondered jetting out of his room to see from the top of the stairs.  “Oh it's just that cute girl named Destiny, my sister's friend and her mother!”  He glanced hearing his mother's call to her that they had arrived. Instantly, Chiffon rushed out of her room with her skating gear when she passed him saying, “See you later knuckle-head!”  She smirked attempting to head downstairs.

“Hey, where are you going?”  He frowned.

“What does it look like silly?  Destiny's mom is going to drop us off at the skating rink!  We're going to have so much fun!  I have to go now, so bye!”  She quickly trampled down the staircase.

“Don't worry Veronica, she's in good hands!”  Destiny's mother assured.

“Oh Donna, I'm not worried!  I know you will have it under control. Button your coat Chiffon before you catch a cold out there!  You all have fun now!”  Veronica expressed opening the door for them.

“Bye Mama!”  Chiffon waved going out the door.

“Why does she get to go out and I can't!”  He stormed back into his room and closed the door.  While glancing out the window, he could see them drive away when he sighed.  Tossing his basketball up into the air he gazed out in a solitary gloom but noticed the distant demolition of the old Four Kings strip center from the second story of his bedroom window and became curious.  Smoke and debris filled the cold brisk air all the while he could see the yellow bulldozers maneuvering around.
