Batik Design on Cigarettes

Apart from cloth objects, the art of making batik on a cigarette has become a habit that has existed since ancient times in Lasem, Rembang, Central Java. Some people and elders in Lasem said that the batik cigarette culture did not detect when it started.But in the days' people didn't have much money to buy cigarettes. The way to save it is to use coffee grounds to make it last longer.This habit begins with truck and bus drivers who took the Semarang-Surabaya route and vice versa. The culture smears cigarettes with coffee grounds can be found along the northern coast lane. However, they generally do not form a batik pattern but they do batik designing.

And almost every visitor in a coffee shop does the activity of making batik on cigarettes. Some coffeeshop voluntary teaches the visitor to draw batik line in the cigarettes.

Many batik craftsmen are famous for the blood of the art of batik in Rembang and Lasem up to now. Generally, the native those who seem fluent in batik are the elderly aged 70-80 years. They have certain hours to visit the stall while making cigarettes. Usually early in the morning at 04.3, then in the afternoon at 13.00, and in the afternoon at 16.00.
