Our adventure starts in Hawaiiwhere the ukulele originatedaround 200 years ago.
In Hawaiian the name ukulele roughlymeans ‘jumping flea’. This is becauseyour fingers look like jumping fleaswhen you play it! The ukulele became sopopular in Hawaii that even the RoyalFamily of Hawaii played it.
The ukulele caught on in the UnitedStates in the 1900s when a craze ofukulele playing swept the nation. Theukulele is now a well-known instrumentacross the world.
Ukuleles are traditionally made outof woods like mahogany and koa. Thestrings were traditionally made fromsheep or catgut, now they are normallymade from nylon plastic.
