GUARDIANS OF LIGHT
THE TRUE NATURE OF ANGELS AND THEIR ROLE IN OUR LIVES
SAMUEL SHEPHERD
Angels have fascinated humanity for millennia, appearing in the texts, myths, and traditions of diverse cultures around the world. The origin of angels, often seen as celestial messengers, is deeply embedded in religious doctrine and spiritual belief systems, yet their beginnings remain mysterious and awe-inspiring. In Abrahamic traditions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—angels are regarded as divine beings created by God before the material universe came into existence. Their purpose was to serve as intermediaries between the divine and humankind, carrying out the will of their Creator with absolute loyalty and devotion. These beings exist outside the limitations of human experience, residing in realms of light and spirit, beyond the physical world.
In the early stages of religious development, angels were perceived as extensions of God’s presence, often representing divine forces or attributes. Over time, angels evolved into distinct personalities, with individual roles and hierarchies. In the Hebrew Bible, the word "malak" is used to describe these celestial beings, which translates directly to "messenger." This designation emphasizes their primary role as emissaries of God's commands. One of the earliest and most significant examples of angelic activity in the Bible can be found in the story of Abraham, where three angels visit him to announce the birth of his son, Isaac, and to warn of the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. This instance highlights the dual role of angels—not only as bringers of good news but also as bearers of divine judgment.
The early Christian tradition further refined the concept of angels. Influenced by Jewish angelology, Christian theologians like Dionysius the Areopagite developed intricate hierarchies of angels, classifying them into orders or "choirs" based on their proximity to God. These included Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones, who occupied the highest ranks and were closest to God, as well as Dominions, Virtues, and Powers, which served as intermediaries between the higher realms and the earthly plane. The lowest orders, including Principalities, Archangels, and Angels, were tasked with directly interacting with the human world, guarding nations and guiding individuals. Archangels, like Michael and Gabriel, took on especially prominent roles, being seen as protectors of humanity and warriors against the forces of evil.
In Islamic tradition, angels, known as "malaika," were created from pure light and serve similar functions to their Jewish and Christian counterparts. Islam’s view of angels is heavily influenced by the Qur’an, where they are described as beings who perform various tasks, such as recording the deeds of individuals, delivering revelations to prophets, and overseeing natural events. The angel Jibril (Gabriel) is especially significant, as he is believed to have delivered the words of God to the Prophet Muhammad, marking one of the most crucial moments in Islamic history. Islamic teachings emphasize the infallibility of angels, stating that they are incapable of sin and have no free will, unlike humans and jinn, which sets them apart as perfect servants of God's will.
The concept of angels is not limited to the Abrahamic faiths. In Zoroastrianism, one of the world’s oldest monotheistic religions, spiritual beings called "yazatas" perform a similar role to that of angels. They are divine entities that assist in the cosmic battle between good and evil, acting under the guidance of Ahura Mazda, the supreme deity. Similarly, in Hinduism, devas and asuras represent spiritual beings that either protect or challenge the cosmic order. Though not identical to the angels of Western traditions, these figures reflect a universal fascination with celestial beings that mediate between the divine and the material world.
Angels, across various belief systems, are often associated with light, purity, and wisdom. They are described as luminous beings, radiant with divine energy, representing the embodiment of God's will. Their appearance is frequently portrayed as awe-inspiring and otherworldly, often depicted with wings, halos, or radiant light, symbols that signify their divine origin and their role as messengers from higher realms. While some angels, like the Seraphim, are described as having multiple wings or eyes, others appear more human-like, but always with an aura of ethereal beauty and majesty. These depictions have influenced art, literature, and culture, shaping the popular image of angels as benevolent and protective forces.
The role of angels is not merely symbolic or mythical; they are often seen as active participants in the divine plan. Their intervention in human affairs, as described in religious texts, suggests that they are deeply connected to the moral and spiritual guidance of humanity. Angels are often tasked with delivering messages of profound importance, as seen in the story of the Annunciation, where the Archangel Gabriel informs Mary of her divine pregnancy. These interactions emphasize the closeness of angels to the human experience, as they act as bridges between the divine and the mundane.
Across various cultures, the origin of angels continues to inspire both theological reflection and artistic expression. Whether viewed as messengers, warriors, or guardians, angels represent a divine connection that transcends human understanding, offering glimpses into the mysteries of the spiritual realm.
The angelic hierarchy is a deeply intricate and fascinating aspect of religious thought, particularly within the Abrahamic traditions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. These hierarchies reflect the structured nature of the spiritual realm, where angels exist not only as divine messengers but also as beings of immense power and purpose, organized into different ranks and orders according to their proximity to God and their responsibilities within the cosmos. This celestial structure allows for a clearer understanding of the roles that various angels play, from those who dwell in the highest realms of heaven to those who interact with humanity more directly.
In Christian theology, the concept of the angelic hierarchy was formalized most notably by the early theologian Dionysius the Areopagite in his work *The Celestial Hierarchy*. According to Dionysius, angels are divided into three triads or spheres, with each triad consisting of three orders or choirs of angels. These choirs are arranged in a descending order of closeness to God, with the first triad being the most exalted. At the top of this celestial hierarchy are the Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones, beings who are said to exist in the immediate presence of God, absorbed in continuous worship and contemplation of divine truth.
The Seraphim are described as the highest order of angels, known for their burning love and passion for God. In Hebrew, the word "seraph" means "burning one," and they are often depicted as fiery beings, radiating divine light. Their primary role is to praise God endlessly, singing "Holy, holy, holy" as described in the Book of Isaiah. Their intense purity and closeness to the divine make them inaccessible to lower realms, but their influence permeates through the angelic orders beneath them. Following the Seraphim are the Cherubim, who are often depicted in religious art as angelic beings with multiple wings and eyes, symbolizing their all-seeing nature and their role as guardians of divine knowledge and mysteries. The Cherubim are responsible for protecting the holiness of God and often appear in biblical stories as protectors of sacred places, such as the Garden of Eden.
Beneath the Cherubim in the first triad are the Thrones, who serve as the instruments of divine justice and authority. Their primary function is to carry out the will of God by executing divine judgment and maintaining the harmony of the universe. Thrones are often depicted as wheels covered in eyes, a symbol of their vigilance and their connection to the movement of the heavens. While they remain close to the divine, their role begins to extend outward, linking the highest heavenly realms with the lower spheres of creation.
