Alexander Moss awoke painstakingly from a restless sleep. Nightmares plagued him, and as so often, he awoke with horror, breathed heavily, and was completely bathed in sweat. The only thing missing now were the usual headaches that haunted him after his nightmares.
But Alexander didn't have to wait too long for that either. It was always the same. These were not dreams, but memories that often haunted him in his sleep. A traumatic experience he could never completely forget. Although it was many years ago, this incident accompanied him, an event that completely changed his life.
Alexander put his thoughts aside. He couldn't sleep any more and he didn't want to think about the past now. Alexander got up with a grumble and cursed quietly about his headache. He hoped that they would soon subside. A look at his alarm clock on the bedside table told him it was just 5:42 a.m. He turned on the lights and wanted to go to the bathroom for a shower and then get dressed.
Alexander Moss had arrived the day before from Germany in New York City. His plane had landed on schedule around 3 p.m. and everything went smoothly. He was cleared relatively quickly and received a few tips on places of interest from the customs officer in addition to his visa. The very friendly young man said that especially the Empire-State-Building was worth a visit.
His old friend and mentor, John Taylor, a middle-aged man, had picked him up from John F. Kennedy Airport. Together they drove home to him. John lived in New Jersey. He had settled in a community of about twenty-five thousand souls called Mahwah. It was a nice and quiet little town in Bergen County. There he had bought a small house with a garden a few years ago.
It knocked on Alexander's room door and John Taylor entered without a call.
"Is everything all right Alexander?" he asked with a worried expression.
"Yes. Sometimes I still have nightmares."
John nodded briefly, but said nothing more about it. He knew that his former protégé occasionally suffered from nightmares and also knew the reason for it. So there was nothing to say.
"Take a shower and come to the dining room afterwards. I want to talk to you before I go."
Then John left the room and closed the door behind him. After Alexander had showered and dressed, he went to the dining room. His old friend was already waiting for him. Alexander wore a casual black suit, a bordeaux silk shirt and black leather shoes. His jacket had a stand-up collar. With his almost 5ft 10 height, short dark hair, brown eyes and defined athletic figure, this suit suited him particularly well.
Alexander paid a lot of attention to his appearance as John always did. They were both very similar in all respects and went through smoothly as father and son. But they didn't look much alike. John Taylor also wore a black suit. But unlike Alexander, he wore a white shirt and a red tie.
"Where do you have to go John?" Alexander asked as he entered the dining room.
"To high school. I work there as a teacher of history and literature. I've been teaching there for a few years."
"Oh really? Weren't you sick of teaching again after me? As far as I remember, I wasn't exactly an exemplary student."
Alexander grinned at John.
"Haha. You were a very talented student, though very lazy."
John grinned back and both started to laugh. They had a great time together, there was no doubt about that. John handed Alexander a cup, which he drank all at once. Immediately he felt better and revived.
His headaches, which shot him in the head when he got up, were immediately gone.
"What did you want to talk to me about? You didn't invite me here for no reason, did you?"
John sighed.
"No, I didn't. There's a reason for everything, as you know."
John took a short break. He was still looking for the right words.
"Accompany me to school and some things will surely clear up. I just say you are a teacher from Germany who wants to have a look at us. Then no one will ask stupid questions."
Alexander agreed hesitantly and a little later they set off for high school. From John's house, it wasn't very far there and easy to reach on foot. After a walk of about twenty minutes they reached the school. For Alexander this school seemed huge. Bigger than comparable schools in Germany. Somehow everything in the USA was bigger than at home, he thought.
It was just a quarter to eight. So there was still enough time to pay the director a visit to introduce Alexander and to smuggle him in, so to speak. John grinned broadly and you could clearly see that he was happy like a little child. He was clearly a joker. That was absolutely typical for him.
"Hello Maria," John shouted and entered into Director Maria Summer's office without knocking.
Alexander followed him somewhat disapprovingly, but at the same time amused.
"John, you never learn, do you?"
Director Summers teased him. Obviously, the two knew each other quite well. Alexander was curious and wanted to know what was going on between them. Why did he just have the unpleasant feeling that he had fallen into a trap? Anyway, that couldn't be changed anyway.
"Maria, may I introduce you to my nephew Alexander? I had told you about him."
Maria Summers rose from her desk and stepped up to Alexander. She reached out her hand to greet him.
"It is a pleasure to meet you. Your uncle told me a lot about you. You are a teacher in Germany, right?"
John, the old fox, must have already planned all this. Alexander was very angry, but didn't show it. He should have known. Maria Summers was a petite woman, in her late forties, Alexander suspected. She had reddish hair, into which grey strands of hair were already running through. Alexander estimated her to be about 5ft 6 tall. Maria Summers was quite an attractive woman. And above all she was very polite. Alexander immediately liked her.
"Yes that's right. The joy is completely on my side" he replied with the touch of an honestly meant smile.
After the small introduction round was over, the freshly baked nephew followed his so-called uncle. They were in the hallway where his class was. He was still a little annoyed that John had made him his nephew. He couldn't imagine what else was coming to him in his dreams. To his astonishment, however, there were no surprises for the time being. He was very relieved about it.
Alexander accompanied John throughout the day to his lessons. He was currently teaching the graduating class. For John's pupil Alexander was now his nephew and a teacher who was a guest student. Some of the students asked him interesting questions about Germany and its history. To Alexander's surprise, many of them wanted to know something about the Middle Ages. Fortunately, he was quite well versed in this field. Alexander tried to answer all questions and even had fun with it. John gladly gave him an hour for the kids who listened with interest.
The students in John's course were teenagers from seventeen to eighteen. Just over half were girls. John found it nice to see his students adore Alexander. That was simply because of his natural charm. When it rang at the end of the lesson, Alexander offered out of courtesy to answer further questions in the next lesson.
Although he had not expected it, John's students agreed with an applause. Alexander was at least ready and happy that the kids had a break at first. It took half an hour until the next course. Enough time to breathe a sigh of relief. Alexander and John spent the break in the school library. Away from students and teachers, they were able to talk to each other in confidence.
"Tell me why you dragged me here, John!"
"Well, you'll find out for yourself in the literature lesson. After the break. I don't want to anticipate too much," John replied.
Alexander had never really liked being tortured for a long time. Patience was simply not one of his strengths. This virtue seemed completely alien to him. He just couldn't understand why his friend let him fidget like that. To drive away his negative thoughts, he finally changed the subject.
"Uncle John! At least tell me what's going on between you and the director."
Alexander looked at John with an amused and at the same time curious expression. John suddenly felt caught and almost swallowed the cup he had just put on his mouth to drink.
"Well, uh, how can I say?"
John seemed visibly nervous and turned a little red. Was he embarrassed? Alexander amused himself deliciously and his mood was considerably increased because he had embarrassed his mentor. To regain his composure, John tried to distract himself. He handed Alexander a second cup and took a deep breath. John sighed and sat next to Alexander Moss. He began to tell him how they had met two years ago for the new school year. That was nothing unusual, after all, they worked at the same school. But outside school hours they often crossed paths. John and Maria went on some trips together and became very good friends.
Alexander, however, had the impression that there was more between them than John told him. Nevertheless, he left it at that. His curiosity was satisfied. Later he could learn more. When the next lesson rang, the two friends left the library and went towards the classroom. Shortly before they entered the class Alexander asked quietly:
"Does Miss Summers actually know ...?" but he was abruptly interrupted.
A late student ran past them, stumbled and fell down his nose. He was half in the classroom and half in the hallway. It must have looked so funny that all the students tried to stifle the laughter. The moment Rafael Morris turned around and said, "Don't laugh," the laughter started.
Even John and Alexander agreed. The laughter didn't last long to Rafael's luck. Alexander helped him up and said to him:
"He who has the damage does not have to take care of the mockery" and smiled friendly at him.
After Rafael had picked himself up and sat down in his seat, it was obvious to him that he was internally annoyed by his clumsiness. At least he would soon be ignored. Normally this strange Emily Scott was the freak of the school.
***
Emily Scott was seventeen years old. She was 5ft 6 tall, had dark shoulder-length curly hair and brown eyes. Emily had a sporty figure and wore blue jeans with a white tunic and sports shoes. Actually, she wasn't oddly conspicuous; she just looked a little pale.
Emily Scott was frightened when John Taylor approached her to tell her that class had ended. What had happened? Emily felt a little overwhelmed by her teacher. Strange! She must have been dreaming during class. Unfortunately this happened more and more often lately. Emily didn't know why and couldn't remember where her thoughts were.
Visibly intimidated and somewhat unsettled, she packed her school supplies and went to the exit. At the door, she discovered a tall, handsome man talking to Rafael Morris. Who was he? Emily remembered weakly that Rafael had fallen at the beginning of the lesson. Everyone had laughed about it. At least a short moment when she wasn't the center of the mockery. But she couldn't remember any more. Hopefully there was no illness behind it.
When Emily walked carefully to the door, the nice man looked at her. She became embarrassed and felt how she blushed. He somehow made a strange facial expression, as if surprised to see her. Did he know her and just couldn't remember her? Emily also had a strange feeling about him. What exactly she couldn't say. This stranger seemed somehow familiar to her. Emily pulled herself together and said briefly: "Goodbye" and left the classroom.
