In July 2012, I had the privilege of meeting the great clarinetist and instrumental soloist of Klezmer music, Giora Feidman, in Bad Staffelstein, Upper Franconia. Giora Feidman, often referred to as the "King of Klezmer," was born on March 25, 1936, in Buenos Aires. Today, more than eight decades later, Feidman continues to enjoy an impressive career and still fills large concert halls worldwide. This conversation, which now took place twelve years ago, remains in my memory as a valuable and insightful exchange that provided a deep insight into the creation and impact of an extraordinary musician.
HMV: Giora Feidman, you were born in Buenos Aires in 1936. Your parents immigrated to Argentina at the beginning of the last century. Pogroms in their Eastern European homeland of Bessarabia forced them to flee.
GIORA FEIDMAN: What is the role of Judaism in human society? If someone does not study the Torah, they will not understand today's Judaism. In Hebrew, we say Ki Mitzion Tetze Torah ("For out of Zion shall go forth the Torah") from Israel, from the Jews the Torah will go forth. That is the future, because so far, the Torah has not gone forth from the Jews. Understanding the Torah requires considering Judaism. It is said to be a religion because that is a reference point needed to understand. For example, you say: "This is a tree." – But how many trees are there? Are these all trees or are they not? This tree is the reference point. We also say, this is a flower. But how many flowers exist? Endlessly many!
When one speaks of Judaism today, one means a nation that possesses the Torah. Thus, it is a specific nation, not just any nation. It has never been just any nation. – Now you have Tacheles! – Do you know what Tacheles is? You have Tacheles. Tacheles is the worst Hebrew word, one uses it all the time.
How can a society survive 2000 years? – Not with the internet! How could this society survive 2000 years!? Based on the Torah! How is that possible? There must be a power. We have no phone to communicate with it. We do not know when an hour is over. We only know the past hours. Outside of Israel, we turn today into the past, to be sure that it is not today, but tomorrow. In Israel, we only make one day because we know that it is today. Our society has been trying to go home for two thousand years.
The true reason, by the way, why we were expelled from Israel, is the hatred among brothers, as we say in Hebrew. Jews are very dangerous when they hate each other. And this has happened not just once. It has happened more than once! When we became weakened by the hatred among brothers, we were driven from there.
Our society survived two thousand years based on the Torah. There must be something there, something within the Torah. Is the Torah for the Jews? – No, the Torah is for the people! Is what is written in the Torah a secret? – It is not a secret because it is written! I must write. Meanwhile, I no longer know if it's a secret. – I say it's a miracle! But what is a miracle? What does it mean? I mean, when something happens to someone, people say it's a miracle. That's not what I mean, because it is written. If we do not study the Torah, we cannot serve human society.
Today, everyone has unique strengths. There are fabulous lawyers, fabulous scientists in this country. Germany once stood for the end of the Jewish people. But the Jews here say 'first I am German and then I am Jewish.' In the synagogue, everywhere, one sees the influence of society.
