Best Time to Visit Greece

The best time to visit Greece depends on what you want to do:

Spring (April to May):

This is often the best time. The weather is warm but not too hot. Flowers are blooming, and the land is green. There are fewer tourists than in summer, and prices are better. It's great for seeing sights, hiking, and enjoying the islands before it gets busy.

Early Summer (June):

Still a great time, with sunny and warm weather, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. More tourists start to arrive, but it's usually fine.

Peak Summer (July to August):

This is the hottest and busiest time. Expect high temperatures, big crowds, and higher prices, especially on popular islands like Mykonos and Santorini. If you like lively nightlife and don't mind the heat, it can still be fun, but book everything early.

Autumn (September to October):

Another wonderful time to visit. The sea is still warm for swimming, the summer heat is gone, and crowds start to leave. It's great for visiting old sites comfortably and enjoying the islands at a slower pace.

Winter (November to March):

Many island resorts close, but cities like Athens and Thessaloniki are still active. It's a good time for museums and seeing local life without many tourists. Temperatures are mild in the south but can be cold in the mountains.

Chapter 1: Get to Know Greece: A Land of Myths and Marvels

A street view in Kos Island, Greece.

Greece, a land where history breathes and legends live, is a place unlike any other. It’s a country that has shaped Western civilization, from its ideas of democracy and philosophy to its art, architecture, and dramatic tales of gods and heroes. Getting to know Greece means understanding its deep past, its varied landscapes, and its modern spirit.

Brief History: From Ancient Civilizations to Modern Nation

Greece’s history is incredibly rich and goes back thousands of years.

Ancient Beginnings:

It all started with powerful civilizations like the Minoans on Crete and the Mycenaeans on the mainland, known for their grand palaces and early writing.

Classical Greece:

This was Greece's golden age (around 500-300 BC). City-states like Athens and Sparta rose to power. Athens gave us democracy, philosophy (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle), theater, and stunning architecture like the Parthenon. The Olympic Games also began during this time period.

Roman and Byzantine Empires:

After a period of Macedonian rule under Alexander the Great, Greece became part of the Roman Empire. Later, it was a key part of the Byzantine Empire, with Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) as its capital. This era saw the rise of Christianity and impressive Byzantine art and churches.

Ottoman Rule:

For nearly 400 years, Greece was under Ottoman Turkish rule, which left its mark on the culture and architecture, especially in the north.

Independence and Modern Greece:

Greece fought for and gained its independence in the early 19th century (1821-1829). Since then, it has grown into the modern European nation we see today, a member of the European Union, proud of its heritage while looking to the future.

Geography and Climate: Diverse Landscapes, Perfect Weather

Greece is a country of incredible natural beauty and variety.

Mainland:

The mainland is mostly mountainous, with famous ranges like the Pindus and the legendary Mount Olympus, home of the ancient Greek gods. These mountains offer great hiking and even skiing in winter.

Islands:

Greece has thousands of islands. Estimates range from 1,200 to 6,000, depending on how you count them! Only about 227 are inhabited. These islands are grouped into different chains, each with its own unique feel, from the volcanic landscapes of the Cyclades to the green hills of the Ionian islands.

Coastline:

With its many islands and long mainland, Greece has one of the longest coastlines in the world, stretching over 13,676 kilometers (8,498 miles). This means endless beaches, hidden coves, and clear blue waters.

Climate: Greece generally has a Mediterranean climate, which means:

Hot, Dry Summers:

From June to August, expect lots of sunshine, very little rain, and high temperatures, especially in July and August.

Mild, Wet Winters:

Winters (December to February) are mild in coastal areas and on the islands, but can be colder with snow in the northern mountains.

Pleasant Spring and Autumn:

These shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October) offer warm, comfortable weather, making them ideal for visiting, as mentioned in the introduction.

Economy and Society: Understanding Modern Greece

Poros. Greece.

Modern Greece is a blend of tradition and European influence.

Economy:

Tourism is a huge part of the Greek economy, bringing millions of visitors each year. Shipping, agriculture (especially olive oil, fruits, and vegetables), and various services also play important roles.

People and Culture:

Greeks are known for their strong family ties, their love of good food and drink, and their warm hospitality (

filoxenia

). Life often revolves around family gatherings, lively social events, and a relaxed pace. Orthodox Christianity is the main religion and plays an important role in cultural life, with many festivals and traditions tied to the church calendar.

Language:

The official language is Greek. While many people in tourist areas speak English, especially younger generations, learning a few basic Greek phrases (which you'll find later in this guide!) will always be appreciated.

Key Regions and What Makes Them Unique

Greece can be roughly divided into several distinct regions, each offering a different flavor of the country:
