• Prologue

A year had passed since the events and adventures surrounding the witches' castle and the solving of murders in Oldenburg and on the plain of Nazca. The family went about their business and it had become quiet on the south coast of England.

It happened early one morning at the end of the summer when Carolyn, now a pretty young woman, woke up from her sleep. She had never had such a real-looking dream before! A gnarled old tree had spoken to her. She tried to remember. Scraps of thoughts flashed through her mind. She jumped out of bed and rushed into her brother Tom's room opposite. He was still asleep. Carolyn bent down to him and shook his shoulder. Tom opened his eyes, looking grumpy, and asked gruffly: "What's wrong, sister?"

Carolyn stammered excitedly: "I had a strange dream, let's get up and at breakfast I'll tell you everything as far as I can remember. At least I'll try!" she added. Tom rolled out of bed with a growl, pulled on a pair of tracksuit bottoms and a sweater and followed his sister down to the large living room.

• Chapter 1 Carolyn's dream

June and Marc, the parents of the young people and always helpful companions on past adventures, were already sitting at the large breakfast table and looked at the two young people in amazement. "You're early, what's getting you out of bed at this hour?" June wanted to know. Tom, always hungry, replied: "We're going to make our breakfast first and then Carolyn wants to tell us about a dream that woke her up from sleep last night." Carolyn and Tom disappeared into the kitchen and rummaged around for a while before returning. Soon they were seated. Carolyn took a spoonful of cereal and began to talk.

"I dreamt of a tree, actually it was just an old, gnarled trunk. It was so clear and the tree trunk said to me: 'Find me, I need your help. Something is coming towards me and also towards you, but I don't think my strength is enough to stop it. I cannot face what I have seen so clearly on my own. It is not yet here on this world, but it is on its way. It doesn't belong to this planet we live on. I can't say where the threat comes from.

At this point, however, I found the strongest magic power on earth in my search for help. Please set out and find me, we will then have to undertake a great journey to bring help." She continued, "And then there was this plant with the hanging branches and one of them started to move. It pointed to something on its body, which I recognized as a loop of green whip-like branches. I felt as if I should take something out of there. Then there was a loud noise and I suddenly woke up. What do you think of my dream? Is there a new adventure in store for us or how should I understand this dream?"

Tom had listened attentively and then said, mockery in his voice: "Every time you had a dream, dear sister, we got into trouble. I hope what you dreamed doesn't have any special significance for us and our friends again. However, I would like to go on another perilous journey." A familiar voice interrupted him. "Tom, please don't be so hasty. As always, everything should be well thought out!" Tom wheeled around. "Hans!" he burst out. "Where have you suddenly come from, I didn't hear you coming! And what do you know?"

A second voice spoke up and barked: "Just because the young witch had a dream doesn't mean there's any danger. At least I don't know anything yet!" Tom groaned. "Lanudas, of course! So of course the cheeky troll was here again."

Hans sat down, looked thoughtfully in front of him and then said: "Something is going on and now I want to hear Carolyn's dream. Maybe then I can make a connection to what I experienced on my last trip." He fell silent and looked at Carolyn promptly. The young witch didn't take long and recounted her dream in detail. Hans, the young people's uncle, listened attentively, nodded a few times in confirmation and when Carolyn had finished, he said: "I think a lot of things fit together. What I experienced also had to do with trees and it was very strange. There's someone who doesn't want to follow them and that seems to be the one who appeared to Carolyn in the dream. I think we need to find him. The one with the hanging branches will also have a special meaning, should take something out of Carolyn." His face became more and more thoughtful.

He pulled Lanudas out of his pocket by his pointed cap, looked at him questioningly and wanted to know: "What haven't you heard and why don't you know anything? Every time you say that, you're hiding something from me! So tell me, what have you heard and from whom?"

The troll squirmed uncomfortably in Hans' hand before he fisted off: "My friends from the world of the spongers, you know them, have some problems on their world, but I didn't think it was that serious, so I didn't say anything."

"And what's the problem?" Carolyn wanted to know and the troll replied: "Something is rapidly overgrowing the grasslands of their world and casting shadows over their land. They live underground, but they need the grass and other plants for food. Much of it has already died due to the lack of sunlight, which can no longer penetrate the dense leaves, and now they are asking us for help." Meanwhile, with a soft clinking sound, a glowing spot appeared on the wall of the large room and a face emerged. "Maryan!" Carolyn groaned, "What brings you here?" The young woman looked at her friend, whom she had met before her last adventure and who had taught her the basics of magic, for a long time and then said:

"Something is happening here in the city. In some places, trees are suddenly growing at great speed. It doesn't look dangerous yet. Do you know anything about it?" "Yes," Carolyn replied, "I had a strange dream in which an ancient tree gave me a warning and asked us and our friends for help. It told me that we had to find it. Soon, when our friends have arrived, we will set out to talk to him. We will certainly need a lot more information."

"And what do you expect to gain from the search?" Maryan wanted to know. "Unfortunately, we can't say yet," Tom interjected. "We'll keep you posted." Maryan turned her gaze to Carolyn and asked: "What did the tree look like in your dream? Can you tell me what it looked like?" Carolyn did her the favor and tried to describe her dream tree as accurately as possible. The girl thanked her, the light went out and her friend from Oldenburg disappeared. Then several things happened almost simultaneously! The heavy oak front doorbell rang. Tom opened it and saw.... Nothing! Only when he leaned forward did he see Lakuno and Ladina, the two trolls on the doormat!

Seconds later, a rustling could be heard over the garden and Dracontor, the wise dragon, landed somewhat clumsily on the lawn and launched a ball of fire from his open maw into the sky. Meanwhile, heavy footsteps could be heard on the loft stairs and Sulass, the Rucks, with his big sack of course, walked into the living room, put his sack behind an armchair, sat down and looked around curiously with his big brown eyes. Carolyn and Tom, who had now returned to the living room with the trolls, looked at each other in amazement. How did the friends know that they were needed and why had they arrived at the same time?

• Chapter 2 The village policeman arrives.

Suddenly, loud engine noises were heard in front of the house and an old car, its police paint almost unrecognizable, stopped on the gravel driveway with a loud rattle and squealing brakes. The local police officer, O'Donnell by name, got out, walked over to the house, climbed the large flight of steps and knocked on the door. Tom, who had already seen the policeman arrive, opened the door and looked at the officer questioningly. "You've got to see this!" O'Donnel exclaimed excitedly. "There's a tree growing in the middle of my station, it has razor-sharp spikes and it's growing at an incredible speed. When it reached the ceiling..." Tom interrupted him and said: "Come in, then I won't have to tell you everything again." Together they went into the living room and the policeman began to tell the story again and then continued: "When the spiky tree reached the ceiling, there was a shrill noise, the ceiling got a hole and now the plant is growing through my office on the second floor. By the time I get back, I'm afraid the tree will have destroyed the roof. Who of you could come with me to look at the horror tree? Maybe you could help me get rid of it?"

He looked at Carolyn, who he knew was special and had strange powers, and thought, "Maybe she has the means to get rid of the tree."

Tom, his thirst for adventure suddenly awakened, jumped up and shouted: "Hans, come on, take your trolls with you and Carolyn, please come too and don't forget your magic wand." "Slowly," Hans replied. "Perhaps the Rucks would like to accompany us with his sack, then we won't have to carry unnecessary tools. Sulass, are you coming with us? We'd have to take our jeep, though, because we won't all fit in the police car." The big bear grumbled his agreement and the trolls also jumped around excitedly and began to climb up Hans to withdraw into some of his jacket pockets. Together they left the house and set off. Carolyn and Tom climbed into the officer's car, the others climbed into the old jeep, which Hans had managed to persuade to start with some persuasion and drive out of the barn. With a loud roar of the engine, they followed the police officer and soon arrived at the local police station on the edge of the small village. Some of the residents had already gathered there.

They looked in horror at what they saw. A monster of a tree was sticking out of the roof of the police station, most of which had been destroyed. The branches were covered with large spikes that were about twenty centimeters long and looked dangerously sharp. The siblings looked at each other. "What's that," Tom groaned. Sulass grumbled something, put down his big sack, opened it and took out a dangerous-looking lance. He was pointing it at the top of the tree when it happened. The branches whipped in the direction of the group and the long spikes of the tree came loose with a clicking sound and flew towards the bystanders with a rising and falling sound. Carolyn and the trolls reacted almost simultaneously. A wand and the three magical middle fingers of the trolls rose up and created an impenetrable wall with a wave of light, against which the dangerous projectiles bounced and fell to the ground without effect.

Suddenly, a loud roar drowned out the excited cries of the people standing around. A huge dragon hovered towards the dangerous tree with a leisurely flap of its large leathery wings, soared above it, opened its mouth and shot a brightly glowing ball of fire at the trunk of the tree.

The plant let out a shrill cry and the part of the trunk that was hit disintegrated into ash and smoke. The remains of the trunk crashed onto the roof of the police station. Bricks and stones flew around. Still standing before them was the glowing wall Carolyn and the trolls had created in front of them. After the dust had settled, O'Donnell stuttered: "What am I supposed to do now, my house is destroyed by a tree. I don't understand! Thank you for helping me. But where am I supposed to live now?" Marc, who had stayed in the background until now, spoke up.

"You can stay with us until your police station is repaired, we have enough space in the big house." "And what do I do with the small prison?" the police officer wanted to know and Mark replied with a laugh: "We'll set it up in our barn, that's where we'll lock up the bad guys, there probably won't be that many." The wall of light that had protected them from the attack of the dangerous tree had now gone out as the trolls began to perform a crazy dance. They joined hands and a bell of light formed above them, shining brightly. It drifted towards the police station, rose up, turned black and covered the badly damaged building.

A rumbling began and the parts of the tree that had survived the fire flew in a high arc behind the building. Roof tiles and stones lying on the forecourt suddenly disappeared and a short time later the black hood went out. The house stood in its place, looking almost as before. O'Donnel stood rooted to the spot, unable to believe what he had just witnessed.

Tom, who was watching the action carefully, suddenly saw small cotyledons coming out of the ground wherever the dangerous spikes had bounced off the glowing screen. He said aloud to the still frozen crowd: "I don't think it's over yet, something's stirring!"

Hans winced. Then he saw it too. "I think we need to take action again. Sulass, do you have anything in your sack that we might be able to use?" The big bear grumbled a little, put down his sack, reached in and took out a large bag made of brown paper. He handed it to Tom and mumbled: "A grain on each sheet. The trolls should help you with this, they are closer to the ground and will make sure that nothing of the new plants is overlooked." Tom took the bag, called the trolls to him and together they sowed grain after grain on the seedlings.

A shrill beeping filled the air, the leaves rippled, contracted, turned brown and disintegrated into dust, which was blown away by a light wind. Tom searched the ground again attentively. He could no longer see any of the large green cotyledons that had just emerged. He breathed a sigh of relief, turned to his uncle and asked: "And now? Don't we have to take care of Carolyn's dream and the tree now? And what do we do about the schwammerss? How can we help there? Here it was one tree, there will already be many. I think Dracontor should assemble a group of dragons and set off for the schwammerss. After all, our friend here has put the tree in its place." Hans nodded in agreement.

• Chapter 3 Maryan investigates

Maryan, after talking to Carolyn and telling her what was going on in Oldenburg, tried to draw the tree her friend from England had described on a large sheet of paper. She kept using the eraser and after a while she nodded, put the sheet to one side and began to think. Where had she seen such an old tree before? She thought of the many excursions she had taken with school or with her mother. Somehow the picture she had drawn seemed more and more familiar. She had been there before! Excitedly, she got up, reached for her phone and called her friend Maya. She excitedly told her what had happened and minutes later the doorbell rang. Maryan rushed downstairs and opened the door, let Maya in and a short time later they were talking excitedly about what Maryan had heard from her friend Carolyn in England.

Her friend, who had been friends since childhood and had attended the same school, was reviewing tours and excursions. She kept looking at the drawing that Maryan had made.

"I think I've seen a tree like that before," she said thoughtfully. "It was on a trip and it wasn't far from Oldenburg. But I'm not sure. I think it was on one of the many school trips to the area around the city. I'll see if I took a photo back then." She began to rummage in a drawer and eventually pulled out a thick envelope marked 'school trips'. She took out the pictures and together they began to look at the photos. Suddenly she stopped, picked up a picture and placed it on the table. "This is the tree that Carolyn described to me, for sure!" she exclaimed. Her friend took the picture, looked at it for a long time and then said: "Yes, we were there, the tree is in a small town, let's send the picture to Carolyn." Maryan reached for a small box on the shelf behind her, opened it and took out a stick. She turned to her friend, looked at her and then said: "What you see now, you must not tell anyone else under any circumstances! I'll tell you my secret now!" She smiled and continued: "Maya, I'm a witch!" Her friend looked at her in disbelief. She hadn't expected that and what kind of strange wand was that? She was still shaking her head in disbelief when Maryan placed the picture on the table in front of her.

She pointed the wand at the picture and mumbled something that Maya didn't understand. A glowing spark came out of the tip of the wand, touched the picture and with a soft smacking sound it disappeared. "How did you do that and where is the picture now?" Maya wanted to know. "In England, with my witch friend Carolyn," Maryan replied. Something strange suddenly happened. A reflective circle formed on the ceiling, which suddenly became transparent. A young woman appeared in the circle, looked at Maryan and asked: "Who is that with you?" "That's my friend," Maryan replied, "I told her about our arts and she promised me to keep it to herself." "OK," Carolyn replied, "then let's talk about the painting. It's exactly the tree we're looking for. Where is it?" "Very close to Oldenburg, it's estimated to be a thousand years old and we saw it on a school trip I think two years ago." Maya nodded and added: "The ancient tree is in the village square and the road goes around it. The villagers have put up a small railing with a lawn on the inside. If I remember correctly, one of our classmates took a photo there and gave it to us as a present. You have just conjured up this photo. How does this story continue?"

Carolyn's voice could be heard from the ceiling and a young man could be seen in the background. "Who's that?" Maya whispered and Maryan replied: "That's Tom, he's Carolyn's brother." Maya smiled to herself. "Well, well, well," Carolyn's voice rang out, "I'm sure you'll get to know each other. But now we have to go to the tree, I'll send you the trolls, they can get you to your destination in seconds. I've told them what to do. Don't be alarmed if it's about to get loud." She had barely said it when a bang sounded and three dwarfish figures fell out of the ceiling onto the large carpet.

"These are Lanudas, Lakuno and Ladina, two troll men and a troll woman. They have magical powers and helped the Oldenburg commissioners a lot on our last adventure. I think they can take us to the tree." One of the trolls fisted off: "Now hurry up, I've brought the picture again, Maryan, take it in your hand and stand close together so that the three of us can hold hands. Now get going!" Maryan, who had experienced the trolls several times before, grabbed Maya's hand and pulled her towards her. The trolls formed a circle and began to dance.

Their small steps became faster and faster and a black funnel formed on the ceiling. It descended and completely enveloped the five figures. The girls felt a strong wind carrying them away. Just seconds later, they fell from a low height onto a soft patch of grass. "Where are we?" stuttered Maya, looking around and startled. In front of them was the tree that they had sent as a photo to Carolyn and that Maryan was now carrying in her hand again. The trolls had rushed towards the tree as fast as their short legs would allow and placed their long-fingered hands on its bark.

"What are you doing?" Maryan shouted and, as if blown by the wind, they heard the answer fade away. "We're taking him to England, we'll get you afterwards, but please don't stay in this place, go to the nearby church and hide there. We will find you and then transport you to England as well." The tree began to disintegrate, its long roots came out of the ground, which immediately closed up again, grass grew up and it looked as if there had never been a tree there. Then the ancient trunk was gone, along with the trolls. Maryan looked at Maya and said to her in a low voice: "We should do what the trolls said, let's get out of here, I can already see the church tower."

They quickly walked towards it, found a bench in the shade of the old walls and sat down.

There was a lot of noise nearby. Several residents and visitors had already noticed that the tree was missing and were discussing where it had gone and how it could have disappeared without a trace. The friends listened intently as there was a rustling sound behind them. The trolls were back and asked the girls to get ready for the way back.

Again they began to dance, the black funnel formed and sucked them up, only to have them reappear immediately on a lawn in front of the old manor house in England, right in front of the tree that had stood not far from Oldenburg a short time ago.

The big door of the house opened and Carolyn, Tom and a strange-looking bear ran down the stairs. Arriving in front of the tree, Carolyn asked: "Tree, you called me and sent me a dream. Now I want to know what it's about, what the danger is and how we can help you."

• Chapter 4 The tree reports.

The old tree trunk began to move, part of the bark opened and a mouth emerged. The wooden lips opened and the tree began to speak. "I have already told you many things in your dream and some things have already happened here and in other places. You have managed to avert a very small part of the danger. You have powerful friends, especially the dragons. But what is the reason, Carolyn, mighty sorceress, why I have crept into your dream? There is a tree, a great magic tree that wants to subjugate nature. It can transform the earth and other worlds into a plant kingdom, all animals on land and in the sea are to disappear. You see, all of humanity is under threat. You and only you can stop him together. However, he is not on this planet, he is currently attacking one of your friends' worlds, which you call Schwammer. Here's how he does it. He shoots his seed into the soil of the planet. After only a short time, this seed of destruction sprouts and begins to spread at breakneck speed.
