“Realization means you should write, every one of you, what is your realization. What for this Back to Godhead is? You write your realization, what you have realized about Kṛṣṇa. That is required. It is not passive. Always you should be active. Whenever you find time, you write. Never mind, two lines, four lines, but you write your realization. Śravaṇaṁ kīrtanam, writing or offering prayers, glories. This is one of the function of the Vaiṣṇava. You are hearing, but you have to write also. Then write means smaraṇam, remembering what you have heard from your spiritual master, from the scripture. Śravaṇaṁ kīrtanaṁ viṣṇoḥ: (SB 7.5.23) about Viṣṇu, not for others. Don't write any nonsense thing for any nonsense man. Useless waste of time. Viṣṇu. Write about Viṣṇu, Kṛṣṇa.”
(Śrīla Prabhupāda - Lecture on Brahma-samhita, Verse 32 Excerpt -- Los Angeles, August 14, 1972)
To Śrīla Prabhupāda, the lineage of spiritual teachers,
Śrī Guru and Gauranga.
I'm not a sādhu, yet, I practice. Humility is my daily bread and what I fear is pride and lust. I have been saved from drowning in the ocean of existential misery, by dint of transcendental knowledge given to me by Kṛṣṇa's representative, the spiritual master. He is a sādhu, and I'm his servant. He's most dear to God and has understood the Absolute Truth by scrutinisingly studying the revealed scriptures. Being his servant means that I spend my evenings in the library, acquiring knowledge, writing and translating. It means that I follow his instructions and stay at a temple where my services are needed. Sometimes I speak philosophy, and sometimes I clean the toilets. Daily, I adhere to chant my prescribed numbers of rounds as I have vowed before my spiritual father. As a child obeys, I also committed to undergoing certain samskaras, or purifying impressions on the mind by chanting, dancing and taking Prasadam. I promised to follow the four principles of no illicit sex, no gambling, no intoxication and no meat-eating, but am struggling everyday to not fall into the traps of illusion and sinful activity. Actually, I'm most fallen and only by the mercy of the Vaiṣṇava devotees of the Lord, have I gained the merit of becoming a spiritual aspirant who dedicated his life to serve God, whom I call Kṛṣṇa. He is the well-wisher of all living entities. He is the best friend of all. He wants us back in the eternal kingdom of God. This is right, and I'm wrong. Here in this world, Kṛṣṇa's illusionary energy has placed me, due to my forgetfulness of Him. Because I wanted to enjoy independently from Him, I was situated in the dark womb of a yavana lady who had no idea about the eternal nature and science of God. Lost in a dark well of household life, I suffered great part of my childhood with divorced parents, constant anxiety about financial security and health. It wasn't until I left this dark well when I was around 20 years of age, to explore my intrinsic nature finding a spiritual aspect that was fresh and undernourished. I met with travellers throughout time and space to inquire about the truth of nature. Questions like ‘who am I?’ and ‘what is my purpose?’ were never fully answered until I was in the Hare Kṛṣṇa Ashram, a shelter for spiritual souls. On an invitation in the form of a spiritual book by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, I came to join the Ashram for a life-time experience. Every possible question was answered by a group of monks, who have been staying at the Ashram, cooking, cleaning, preaching and maintaining themselves and others. Only 200 metres down Ocean Boulevard in San Diego where the beach meets the Pacific Ocean I met Bhakta Zack, a junior monk, who fascinated me. He had what I was missing. A certain confidence, within humility. A specific happiness within his disciplined speech and behaviour, a magnanimous aura of peace and tranquility in the midst of this incense-filled room.
This was the first encounter with a Hare Kṛṣṇa, or a genuine sādhu. But what is a sādhu exactly? It is defined in the Śrīmad Bhagavad-Gītā (4.8, purport): “According to Bhagavad-gita, a sādhu (holyman) is a man in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. A person may appear to be irreligious, but if he has the qualifications of Kṛṣṇa consciousness wholly and fully, he is to be understood to be a sādhu.”
This definition is specifically given by a sādhu, Śrīla Prabhupāda, who is the example for the modern age, what a sādhu should be.
