The only way to avoid punishment is to flee. On this she experiences many adventures. It has to prove itself in different regions of the world. Experience the influences of religion as well as hunger and abundance. The Ukraine war happens to be an important part of the story. Masa has finished cleaning up the kitchen. Now just take the laundry off the line and fold it into a pile, and then her housework is done. She puts the pile of laundry in the chest. She carefully looks around the hut. Her parents and brother are gone. Now she can start her brother Elin's laptop.
So, she can leave her prison, her parents' hut, for a short time, at least mentally. Her parents have locked her since she is 12 years old. This will remain so until her father finds a husband for Masa. That's how it is in strictly Muslim families in Saudi Arabia.
Although she never actually learned to read and write - girls in Saudi Arabia don't need that - she learned years ago how to use a PC from her brother. When she was locked away at the age of 12, she used the time when she was alone at home and learned how to use the PC. Now she can not only call up the pictures her brother looked at; she also understands the English texts. Of course, she's not allowed to write, she's not allowed to leave any traces, if her brother noticed that he would have to put the PC away and hide it, she's convinced of that.
Since the neighbour’s dog starts barking loudly every time someone approaches the huts, she has enough time to put away the PC and get back to housework when someone from the family approaches.
Her family lives in a hut outside of Duba in a small ravine. The huts can only be reached via a narrow path. In the past with the donkey, today her father and brother have a motorcycle. They work in the port, ten kilometres away. Her mother regularly goes to the market to sell the fruits of the garden. When she doesn't have her own fruit, she helps other market women. Masa has enough time to deal with the PC. She is very diligent and has acquired a great deal of knowledge in the two years.
At dinner, her father informs her that his brother Arif is coming to visit with his family at the weekend. This is a happy event every year and Masa looks forward to it. They usually drive to the sea in their uncle's car.
One of the rare occasions when Masa can get out of the cabin. Her uncle is also good looking and likes her a lot. She can't wait.
Since her uncle's last visit, she has also expanded her knowledge of men. Now she knows what they look like and what they particularly like. Let's see how her uncle reacts to this.
Masa does not sleep well; she is very happy to be able to leave the hut again. She puts on her most beautiful dress, white and made of silk. She washed her hair freshly and it now falls in light curls down to her shoulders.
Finally, she hears the dog barking. She eagerly awaits Arif and his family. He hasn't been married long and only has a little daughter who is just learning to walk. Masa is looking forward to the little one, she has never seen her.
The door opens and her father greets his brother with a kiss. Arif's wife still wears the chador, but she hastens to take it off as soon as she enters the hut. Now she is also greeted by her father with a kiss, after which both are greeted by the relatives with the usual kisses.
Mother has set the table. First is eaten. Everything takes far too long for Masa; she longs for the sea. Finally, out of the cabin again.
It's almost two o'clock in the afternoon when they finally get in the car. Both families are squeezed together in the small car. It's not far to the sea.
A blanket is spread out on the beach and you sit down in a circle. This part of the beach is deserted and the women take off their chadors. Masa doesn't stay on the blanket for long, she wants to cool off her feet in the sea. Arif and Elin also get rid of their sandals and accompany Masa into the water.
Now we're fooling around. You splash water on each other and they run after each other. Uncle Arif and Masa are getting further and further away from the family. Her brother Elin gets bored and returns to the blanket.
The two romping around are now already out of sight of the family. Masa continues to climb into the water. As a result, the skirt sticks to her. The white fabric becomes practically transparent. Arif is delighted. Masa has assumed female forms since he last saw her. When she climbs out of the water, she stands in front of him practically naked. She makes no effort to hide her nudity. She wants to explore the effect her body has on a man. Arif's stares are like spears and make her heart pound. She has never experienced anything like this.
Arif's pants are soaking wet too and he can't hide his body's reaction to the naked Masa. For the first time, Masa sees his cock getting bigger and bigger, which makes her even more excited.
Arif approaches Masa and playfully pushes her into the water. She holds on to him as she falls and now, she feels his excitement rubbing against her body. Falling backwards, Masa gets into deeper and deeper water. Now she dares not only to see his swelling in his pants, no, she becomes cheekier and grabs the interesting toy with her hand, which now twitches violently. Arif's hands are also becoming bolder. He caresses her tight breasts, then his hand wanders over her stomach to her thighs. A feeling she doesn't know and almost drives her insane. Now the two forget the world around them. After a foreplay that leads her to the brink of fainting, Arif becomes intrusive and doesn't hold back. Masa is overwhelmed, she didn't really want to go that far. Arif penetrates her and Masa experiences an unfamiliar pain.
A loud scream from the beach ends the hustle and bustle and calls the two back to the real world. Arif's wife stands on the beach and screams so loudly that the whole family rushes to her. A few strangers also come along and, on the beach, people gesticulate and shout as if the world is about to end. The beautiful game between the two ends as quickly as it began. They get out of the water and approach the gathering of people who are arguing vigorously. Everyone can see Arif pulling up his pants, although due to the wetness, the bulge in his pants is still clearly visible. Everyone knows what kind of game the two played.
Things are getting critical for Uncle Arif. The crowd accuses him of raping Masa. Only his physical superiority protects him from physical attacks. But Masa, too, is being harassed primarily by Arif's wives. She is accused of being too seductive in her dress, which encourages men to mount her.
The discussion is getting louder and more and more people are getting involved. When is there something going on here on the beach? You have to enjoy that. Everyone participates loudly in the palaver, regardless of whether they can contribute or not. The opinions are made anyway, clearly a scandalous behaviour.
Suddenly people fell silent. The muezzin's voice can be heard in the distance. It's time for prayer, that's more important now. As if on command, everyone kneels down. The lucky ones have their carpet with them, the others kneel in the sand. Together, everyone mumbles verses from the Koran. Masa has time to think about what actually happened. She realizes she has a bigger problem. As nice as the minutes were in the water, she realizes that her life has taken a drastic turn. Her father's gaze is clear. He would like to kill her. How is he supposed to find a wealthy man for Masa now? An almost unsolvable problem. If only he hadn't hesitated so long. He had applicants, but either the families were not good or the applicant was too old. It's too late now, he has to step back in any case. The fact that his family can rise to higher circles is over.
The prayer is over. Now the palaver starts again with even greater violence. In the meantime, the religious guards have also been informed and they appear on the beach. They find out briefly what the cause of the tumult is, then it is quickly ended, the two perpetrators are arrested for the time being.
Masa sits on the edge of the bunk in the small cell and cries. This is not how she imagined everything. Your happiest moment in your life has turned into a nightmare within seconds. Being locked up isn't the problem, but she's afraid of what's to come.
There is a knock on the cell door and it is opened a little later. The man who enters introduces himself as her attorney. After a monologue from the lawyer, he gives her some tips. He points out to Masa that she must not incriminate Arif, otherwise he faces the death penalty.
"Surely you don't want that?" the lawyer makes a worried face.
"No, but I'm afraid," replies Masa.
"That's understandable," says the lawyer, "you're still young, the court will take that into account and make a mild sentence!"
"Are you sure?" Masa asks, "I just wanted to play and then he couldn't be stopped and took me like his wife. I didn't want that."
"It will all be cleared up," says the lawyer, "the court is investigating everything. But remember, your answers could mean death for Arif."
"Nothing happened," Masa objects.
"Nothing happens!", the lawyer gets excited, "Adultery is not tolerated in Islam, it's a serious crime."
"I didn't feel that way at the time," explains Masa, "for me it was just a gimmick."
"It wasn't a gimmick," the lawyer explains emphatically, "it was adultery, think what that means for Arif. - I have to go, the time is up."
Now Masa is alone again. The lawyer's visit hasn't made her feel any better. On the contrary, she is even more insecure. Your testimony could mean death for Arif. She feels like a killer before stabbing.
After three days, she is fully veiled and taken to the courtroom for the hearing. The two guards lead her to a chair in the middle of a room. They signal her to sit down and wait. The guards leave the room. Masa is alone. She looks around shyly. She hears voices in the next room. Your tone doesn't bode well. After a long wait, a door opens behind her. She hears footsteps but doesn't dare to turn around. The entering men walk past her to the side and sit down on a long podium set up in front of her chair. They wear traditional clothes.
The men settle in without saying a word. After a while, the man in the middle raises his arm and the other men fall silent.
He makes a sign to Masa to take off the veil. She greets the men with a timid smile. In the meantime, the Défense attorney has taken a seat next to her. Masa trembles with fear, which pleases the men on the podium. She should only feel afraid, she deserves that.
'You only answer,' her counsel whispers to her, 'if I allow you to. Otherwise, I'll talk."
The negotiation begins with the reading of personal data. Specifically, it is emphasized that her sixteenth birthday was two months ago, so she is no longer judged as a child. Then the indictment is read out. Adultery in a particularly serious case.
The chairman reads out a record which was written down by a policewoman on the day in question. It is emphasized that Masa approached Arif in provocative clothing. Such behaviour is unacceptable for a young woman, especially since she knows that Arif is married.
"It was initially a harmless gimmick among relatives," explains her Défense attorney to the court.
"We have other information," explains the Qadi, looking for something in his documents. "This photo proves that the accused shamelessly displayed her body."
In his right hand he shows the other men a photo of Masa getting out of the water. It is almost impossible to tell that she is wearing a skirt. It sticks to her body and her nipples and pubic hair are clearly visible. He passed the photo to the other men, who looked at it greedily.
After her Défense attorney has given her permission, Masa is allowed to comment on the photo.
"We didn't plan to get into the water with the skirt," she explains shyly, "I've never been in the water with the skirt and I didn't know that it would become transparent. We only got into the water when we splashed each other."
"Yes, the beginning was probably just a gimmick," confirms the Kadi, "but then the accused tried to seduce Arif into adultery."
"It's only natural," Masa tries to explain, "when a penis that keeps getting bigger interests a young girl, I've never seen that before. We women are designed by nature to be aroused by such a sight."
"Who explained it to you about nature? There's nothing in the Koran and you probably didn't think of it on your own."
Now Masa finds himself in an emergency of explanations. After intensive cross-examination, she has to admit that she occasionally looked at anti-Islamic websites on a computer.
This statement got the men on the podium in a state of excitement. Here they are not only dealing with an adulteress, but also with a woman who does not follow the rules of the Koran, which causes the judges to get very excited.
The Défense attorney is still trying to calm things down, but he is actually satisfied with the course of the negotiation. All he cares about is exonerating Arif, after all he is being paid by his family and in this respect the process is going extremely well. He will find enough arguments to defend Arif. Now he can focus on rescuing Masa from being stoned to death, because if the trial continues, that's a possibility.
"Try to understand the girl!" he implores the court, "she was locked up at home alone for four years, the only distraction was her brother's computer."
"But why is she looking for such information?"
"It was coincidence," explains the Défense attorney, "consider she can't read or write, so she's looking for a change by clicking on icons. We know that the Islamophobic forces are trying to spread their views, Masa didn't stand a chance, sooner or later she had to go to such sites."
The discussion went back and forth for a while. Then the Kadi explains: «The court has enough information to make a judgment, we withdraw to the consultation.
After half an hour, the men reappear in the room. Masa had to stay in her chair the whole time.
"The court has come to a verdict," explains the qadi, "the accused was found guilty of adultery. We refrain from stoning her because of her age.
In this case, the law provides for the accused to be sentenced to one hundred lashes. Considering her age, the lashes will be spread over ten months, starting tomorrow morning with the first ten lashes. Between the floggings, the accused can wait with her family for the next execution. The accused can go back to their cell. The session is over."
Masa breaks down crying and is carried out of the court.
The next morning, after Masa could not sleep all night, a female guard appears and gives her the clothes that she must wear when the sentence is carried out. She gets ten minutes to change.
After she has changed, the two guards appear and lead her into the prison yard. There are already a few men waiting there, probably over twenty, who will monitor the execution of the sentence and have to confirm it later.
The guards hand her over to a man dressed in black and disappear into prison. Now Masa is alone with the men in the yard. The man in black takes her hands and ties them together. The bound hands are hung on a pole in a hook. The hook is placed so high that her body is stretched out, with the result that her breasts are visible under her shirt.
That's not all, now the man strips in black, which he pulls down his shirt, taking every opportunity to touch her breasts. Now her naked upper body is exposed to the men's gaze. Masa is trembling with fear, but the stretched-out posture prevents the men from noticing the trembling.
Now the cadi appears and reads out the verdict again. The men murmur a prayer in unison while Masa expects the first blow any second. But the men are in no hurry. They enjoy how the young woman, panicking with fear, awaits the first blow.
Completely surprising, Masa is hit by the first blow. She screams loudly and throws her upper body forward as far as the bonds will allow. In her mind she curses the kadi. Her breasts are still bouncing slightly due to the rapid movement of her upper body, which the men obviously like. The pain on her back is like hell, she didn't expect that, but she can't help it. She is at the mercy of men.
Then the next lash. She screams even louder than the first. Her thoughts curse Arif for putting her in this position. The men like the idea.
Then the third blow. This time she stifles the cry and curses Islam, which provides for such punishments.
With the fourth blow she screams again, even though she actually wanted to suppress the scream. It did not work. This time she curses her father, who had imprisoned her for four years. Now the pain doesn't increase anymore. The pain threshold has been reached.
She endures the fifth blow without screaming, cursing her defender who misadvised her.
The sixth blow is answered by a scream again, because it hit a particularly sensitive spot, now Mohamed curses it, who had ordered such a brutal punishment.
On the seventh blow, she briefly loses consciousness. The hook prevents it from collapsing. In her mind she curses Saudi Arabia, which condones such punishment.
She hardly notices the eighth blow because it is drowned out by the constant pain. Despite this, she finds the power and curses all men, at least the Islamic men.
Only two more, then she's over it. But now the pain is so great that she almost faints. When the whip falls on her back, she is wide awake again. Now she curses her mother, who could not protect her from the men.
After the tenth blow it's over. Now she is hanging unconscious on the hook. The last second before she fainted, she cursed Allah, then it got dark and she felt nothing more.
Masa only wakes up when her brother washes her face with a wet rag. Her back hurts a lot, but her soul hurts even more. She has lost faith in people. Your heart is full of hate. A feeling she has never known before.
When she regains consciousness, her brother treats her bleeding back with an ointment that the guard kindly gave him, which prevents severe scarring. It also numbs the pain a bit.
'You can take your sister home now. We're expecting them in a month," the guard explains to him at the end. Then he closes the prison gate.
"Can you hold on to me?" asks Elin, "you have to sit on the motorcycle, otherwise you have to walk."
"It'll be fine," replies Masa, "but drive carefully."
At home she is welcomed by her mother. She leads them into a small room. While she was in prison, father had a wall built so that she is now housed in a lockable room.
"What a shame for the family," mumbles mother as she lays her on the bed, puts a water bottle next to the bed for her and then locks the door from the outside. Now Masa is alone with her anger. She doesn't dare think about what will happen in a month's time. Will the pain be that bad again?
The next few days are hell for Masa. She can only sleep lying on her stomach. The contempt of the family hurts her a lot. Your new prison is well guarded. She is only allowed to leave the room to eat together with the family. In order to relieve herself, she has to make herself known by knocking on the door. If nobody is at home, she has a bucket in the room in case of an emergency, in which she can relieve herself. After the first time, she always arranges it so that business can be done after dinner, which also goes down better with the family, because the full bucket doesn't smell pleasant.
Hardly anyone speaks at the table. Parental contempt is pervasive. They had placed such high hopes in Masa and hoped that she could marry into a respected family, but that is no longer possible. It looks like she's going to have to stay in her room for a long time. Whats man wants to marry an adulteress?
After a week, the pain in my back subsided. At the same time, her hatred of her family increases. She is very disappointed in her. No compassion, only contempt is omnipresent.
"I tried," her father begins, addressing Masa at lunch, "to have the sentence suspended, but I didn't get through. The verdict stands. The trial against Arif took place last week, the verdict, a fine and the lawyer's costs. I paid Arif half of the bus. The court found it proven that he had been seduced and punished in lenient terms. At least with my brother, the relationship will normalize.”
Masa could scream with anger. At the beginning of her father's speech, she was touched that he stood up for her, she hadn't expected that much, but then when he informed about the verdict against Arif. That was another lash for Masa. A good relationship with his brother is more important to her father than the well-being of his daughter. It hasn't counted for a long time.
For the next few days there was no more talking at the table. Masa might as well be dead; she suspects the family would even be relieved. She stays in her room and the hatred that builds up in her grows bigger and bigger. She also considers taking her own life. But don't know how.
After two weeks she knocks on the door, she has to go urgently. This time only her brother is at home. The parents are both at work.
"How are you?" asks Elin.
"Stupid question," replies Masa, "how am I supposed to feel, you can see that for yourself."
"Yes, I can see that," says Elin, "that's why I thought about helping you escape. I can't see you suffering like that."
"Of course, I would flee," replies Masa, "but how am I supposed to do that, everything will be much worse afterwards."
"I could take you to the beach on a motorbike at night and get you a boat with food, and you'd have to do the rest yourself."
"Would you do that for me?" Masa is surprised at his suggestion; she didn't expect that.
"I think I could plan it out," says Elin, "so that no one will notice that I've helped you, and if they do, it doesn't matter, I can't see you suffering any longer."
"I love you!" Masa is glad that she didn't curse her brother, "everything is better than continuing to live like this!"
"It's dangerous if no ship finds you and picks you up, it would be your death." “That solves my next problem, I keep thinking about how to kill myself. Living like this is useless, I'd rather be dead." "Then we agree," says Elin, "I need a few days to prepare everything. Behave normally, don't make the parents suspicious. Now always sleep during the day so that you are wide awake at night." "Thank you," Masa hugs him, "I hope it works and if not, it's all over anyway." Four days later, Elin opens the door to Masa's room with the duplicate key that he procured. She's already waiting behind the door and slips through. Elin immediately closes the door again and the two of them quietly leave their parents' apartment. It's a dark night. The moon hasn't risen yet. The only problem might be the neighbour’s dog. Elin expects him to show off briefly, but that's a regular occurrence. It is important that he calms down quickly. Elin parked the motorcycle about two kilometres from the house. If they get to the bike without anyone raising the alarm, the worst is over. The dog only growls briefly. Elin can calm him down; he knows his voice and calms down immediately. Now the two hurries through the night. Still cautiously using any cover. Finally, Elin pulls the motorbike out of its hiding place and starts it. Masa jumps up and clings to Elin and off we go. Don't expect any problems on the way to the port. There is little traffic, it is not unusual for a motorbike to go to the port at this time, no one notices. Elin steers the motorcycle past the harbour and drives along the narrow path used by the bathers along the coast. Just before the path ends, he stops. In the small bay, very close to the fateful beach, they reach the sea. Hidden behind a rock, Elin pulls the small boat out of hiding. It belongs to a man from Riyadh who comes here every now and then to fish. Elin knows he's not coming this month, so no one noticed when he drove the boat out of the harbour last night and hid it behind the rock. The supplies have been secretly brought onto the boat for three days, and everything is well prepared. There is no turning back now.
Now she sits in the boat and looks at the sail, that's all she can do. Of course, she regularly scans the horizon to see if a ship can be seen, but there are no ships. Elin has explained to her that it will probably take a few days to get into the area of shipping lanes. At the moment it's better if no ships show up, it would most certainly be Arab fishermen and she would have to avoid them, which would be difficult, however.
It doesn't matter which ship on the international shipping route to the Suez Canal she finally picks up, she should stop the first ship that comes along, if that's possible at all.
She's been in the boat for hours. Now and then she dozes off, the rest of the time she's lost in her thoughts. She relives her memories again. As a little girl she had it good. They didn't have much and had to help their mother. But she didn't see it as work. In between, she could play with other girls in the small village. Of course, she noticed that her brother Elin was more respected by his father, but she didn't know anything else.
From the 12th birthday it was over. Her parents locked her in her room. When she asked why, she said: "That's what the Koran says."
She now knows that it has to do with her transition from child to woman. For her it was a serious turning point in her life. She was bored to death. Only when the family was at home was, she allowed into the living room and the kitchen, where she had to help mother cook.
After two months she dares to turn on Elin's computer. He plugged the laptop into her room to charge it. None of the family could imagine that Masa could deal with the thing. Noticing that the laptop is always charged in her room, she pays attention to how Elin operated it. It took some time, but then she was able to use the device. First, she learned a few words of English.
She only dares to click on the pages that Elin called up. But already then, a completely new world opens up for Masa. Now she could make good use of the hours she had to spend alone in her room. The neighbor's dog warned her in time so she could log off. She sees how other young women live. They have no restrictions. Why can young women in Europe and America enjoy life and women under the thumb of Islam are locked up, that's just unfair.
After waking up from a nap, she decides to only think in English. For her, the Arabic language, in addition to everyday dealings, only knows the endless suras that she has to quote again and again. She now knows that this is used to control the population. Everyone should be brought into line so that they can be controlled more easily. She hates anything to do with Saudi Arabia.
Unfortunately, she cannot expand her vocabulary in English at the moment, but Masa wants to master the few words she does know. She has no comparison with how her English sounds, but that doesn't matter at the moment. It's not clear if anyone will ever listen to her again. Far and wide no ships in sight. Maybe she has to die on the boat, that's entirely possible, but still better than the lashes. What will happen then? Will she become one of the thousand virgins due to martyrs who die for their faith? She has a problem with this idea, what are they supposed to do with her? At least the ones who blew themselves up with a bomb. They might have a problem using them.
Your thoughts about death are superfluous. It comes as it comes. She can no longer influence it. According to the Koran, in the afterlife there is only a paradise for men anyway. Women are excluded there, what happens to them does not interest the men who wrote the Koran. They're an insignificant by-product.
She has now lost all sense of time. She no longer knows how long she has been floating in the boat on the sea. She's slowly running out of supplies. She is only allowed to eat and, above all, drink small amounts, because the water canister is almost empty. The time she spends dozing, not to say unconscious, in the boat is getting longer and longer. She still watches the horizon while she is awake, searching for ships, but there is only water. Then she falls asleep again, always aware that it is the last thing she notices before she falls asleep forever.
When she wakes up again, she sees a face bending over her. At second glance she realizes that it is a man. She still can't assess her situation, where is she? In any case, she is still alive, her life will go on. Just how, that's not certain yet.
The man wipes her face with a wet rag. When he notices that she is coming to, he gives her some soup. Masa gratefully slurps the soup. A large part runs down her chin. The man dabs the drops away with a cloth. He wants to bring her back to life. Only a few spoonsful of soup are enough for Masa to fall asleep again.
Masa wakes up a few more times and realizes that someone is taking care of her. She can't tell whether it's always the same man, she's still too weak. But she's slowly recovering enough to start thinking again. She is looking forward to her second life.
When she wakes up again, she realizes that there is nobody else in the room. She is surprised to find that she is lying naked in bed. There is no blanket to cover herself with. There is a bowl of rice on a table by the bed. She finishes the bowl with a spoon and falls asleep again. She's slowly regaining her strength. Since she doesn't trust the man, she continues to play the exhausted role when the man enters the room.
When the man brings her the next bowl of rice, she pretends to be asleep and listens to what is happening now. She feels the man stroking her breasts. She concludes from the noises and the rocking of the bed that he is playing with his tail. She doesn't dare to open her eyes.
After a short time, she feels something warm on her stomach. Masa forces himself to remain calm. Moments later, the man wipes them down with a wet rag, then quickly leaves the room.
Does she have to pay like that to eat? At least she's alive. She is at the mercy of the man or men. That's the harsh reality, because if they throw Masa overboard, no one would notice. She's just glad she kept playing weak. Who knows what other ideas the man or men would have come up with. So, she has to keep playing the game, it's her only chance. But at some point, the ship will call at a port, then she must be ready.
The food is served to her a few more times in the same way. Because she can't look, she still doesn't know if it's always the same man. Since she perceives the touches differently, she assumes that the men take turns.
Now she can estimate the time between men's visits. A rhythm has established itself that is probably determined by the food. Masa now risks using the unobserved time and searches her cabin. In addition to the bed, this has a closet and a porthole. The view through the porthole brings nothing new, only sea as far as the eye can see. The closet is more interesting. In this she finds her clothes, neatly folded. That's enough for her, she lies back on the bed.
At the next man less time, she occupies herself with the porthole. It can be opened and is big enough for her to slip through. Just jumping into the sea doesn't make sense right now, but if they call at a port there might be an opportunity to escape.
