Not Just Imagination

The wonderfully atmospheric images in this book were created independently of the content by the photographic artist Hermann Zeichen.

Mr. Zeichen selected fitting illustrations for each chapter from an extensive photo reportage on sadomasochism and fetish and provided them for this publication. The images were captured between 2019 and 2022. Zeichen spent several months photographing at SM parties, swinger clubs, and private group gatherings in London, Amsterdam, and Berlin.

Zeichen typically works with minimal equipment: small, inconspicuous cameras and always without flash. Some photos were even taken with a mechanical rangefinder camera on traditional film and developed in a darkroom.

Big Talk…

But no substance! Even though our friends, acquaintances, and family members no longer believe us: We actually don't practice BDSM ourselves – at least not in our own bedroom, but instead – and let's be honest – much more in our minds.

Out of a whim, during a slow period in our journalism jobs (thanks to this special virus), we came up with the idea to write self-published books on sexuality. Instead of writing limited and dry factual texts, we wanted to have pages for gripping stories, fine details, and deep insights into topics that interest us – and you!

Simply put, in our free time we wanted to write about what isn't published on news websites and in political magazines! This has now become the entertaining part of our daily work.

The very first choice was the dark side of the sex culture because, as modern storytellers, we couldn't resist its spectacular and fascinating topics. Although sadomasochism is becoming more popular, true hardliners still gather in dark and hidden corners to engage in really hardcore activities. While these intense games may not be everyone's cup of tea, even beginners can learn a lot or at least be inspired by experienced professionals.

Our goal was to find such people, talk to them, and bring their thoughts and actions to a wide audience from the perspective of neutral observers. It may sound objective, but it's so much fun that we've made it our additional profession, which we love through and through.

Five books later (and this very first translation from German to English), our enthusiasm for BDSM and related topics has only grown. We already published several books, all containing interviews with sadomasochistic couples, most of whom engage in wildly exotic activities.

Next came a book of fetishes with numerous more or less related topics. Our non-SM favorite in it: the extremely bizarre story of an eyeball enthusiast – and that's definitely a spoiler! The translation of that hopefully soon will be published.

In parallel, we were already working on a book about NOT having sexual interactions – initially to take a break from erotic topics. But it didn't go as planned, and the book also delves into aspects related to BDSM (including practices like years-long chastity out of devotion to a mistress).

As journalists, we almost always stand between the subject and the audience. This often proves advantageous because we can form an unbiased opinion and ask the right questions, making difficult topics understandable and explaining them from a neutral standpoint for our readers.

We had no reservations about delving deeply into the subject matter: Bianca has an unmatched talent for finding people who tell good stories. Even in wind and rain, she walks back and forth in front of the large windows of our favorite writing café in the city center of Enschede (Netherlands), smartphone in hand. Her address book is thicker than an illustrated edition of Harry Potter and she doesn't hesitate to ask anyone – especially as a precaution – for their phone number or email address. You never know what the next story will be.

Sometimes, she spends days researching and making phone calls to find people willing to talk openly and informally about their sexuality and other very personal topics.

For the record: we provided our interviewees with much more coffee than alcoholic beverages. Fortunately, because we are not at all resistant to alcohol, which a professional dominatrix ignored in a meeting at a bar and left us with serious consequences (hangovers) after the meeting.

The peak of Bianca's relentless persistence – even on a different topic – was an invitation to the Halley Station in Antarctica, where the ozone hole was discovered in the 1980s. The International Space Station (ISS) is still on her list, although time for a visit there is running out, as it will only be in operation until 2030.

But back to the bedroom or actually on a road trip across Germany, Austria and Switzerland: With our rickety small car, we crossed the border from Holland (our chosen home) to Germany repeatedly for almost two years. Sometimes to Hamburg, to Munich, several times to Berlin, and even northeast to the picturesque Greifswald – where there are talkative perverts too (you can find their full interviews in our other books).

Sometimes, we combined the trips with official appointments. During the day, we had interviews with politicians, representatives from the business world and environmental organizations, in-depth discussions with scientists, and other experts. Before or after, we had meetings in cafes, bars, and restaurants to switch to a significantly more emotional topic: dark sexuality in all forms and colors!

We filled numerous notebooks with quotes and keywords. Bianca actually got blisters on her fingers when we conducted three interviews over two days (nights), totaling more than fifteen hours.

We noted everything on paper because recording devices don't allow for a natural conversation to develop – and also because we are old school: journalists since the early 90s. Stefan actually wrote his first articles on a Gabriele (a Triumph brand travel typewriter).

In every interview, we asked the very last question about the best tip for erotic, painful, unusual, or simply pleasurable BDSM games. Over two years, we spoke to more than one hundred couples, but only a few had a brief and concise answer to this last question.

The facets of this dark form of sexuality are endless. We constantly encounter new scenarios and practices of which we had apparently no idea before. Towards the end of our conversations, interviewees would tell us about plans they hadn't even put into action themselves. In addition to real and often hardcore sex, we learned about dreams that would give regular people sleepless nights.

The normal positional warfare in the cuddle bed is comparatively straightforward. Although we don't practice it ourselves, we must (by now) admit that BDSM goes far beyond the edges of the mattress: Sadomasochism is a way of life, a costume party, role-play, and the skilled use of countless torture instruments. It's a power play, a game of words, gestures, and it's deeply ingrained in the character of people who are captivated by this desire.

Actually, these are more than a hundred and eleven tips! In many chapters, we tried to look at a topic from different perspectives. In others, we tell about very specific practices that will stay with us forever.

Today, the boundaries between normal and everything beyond are fluid: Tickling can be a fun game but also mean fetish and even a cruel torture. "We didn't realize for a long time that we were doing SM sex", Alexandra told us, as she and her boyfriend transformed a gym into an erotic battleground at night.

Whether you're a newcomer or have a wealth of experience with SM, let yourself be inspired by the countless possibilities between gentle and intense that this form of sexuality offers open-minded and adventurous individuals!

1: Difficult and Prolonged

* "Come back when your hand fits in your own ass", demanded a dominatrix of a potential client who wasn't sure if he should venture to see a commercial dominatrix. After these words the call was terminated by the Mistress.

Long-term games with the hope of an unique experience can motivate submissive individuals to stretch far beyond their personal limits – while at the same time, the pressure mounts on them, knowing that they won't receive any attention from their Mistress or Master until they complete the assigned task.

Tease and denial is the technical term for this motivation, where it often refers to a full stop just before climax. But the principle of hope can also be used by dominant individuals in very agonizing ways at various points.

There are numerous delay and tease tactics that are not limited to stretching games: slaves can be forced into artistic poses or assigned tasks like building, crafting, or sewing specific toys.

One dominatrix instructed her slave to paint a portrait of her – a rather large one. Only when she was satisfied with the painting did she return to base desires. It's a good form of downtime during which the submissive is occupied but not entirely distracted.

And spare your waiting victim the classics like cleaning the apartment or mowing the lawn. The perfect dinner, a relaxing full-body massage, or a good blowjob are more enticing than polishing floors and window glasses. A dominant wife expected a hot, homemade porn video clip from her submissive husband to properly arouse her.

And all of this doesn't have to be accomplished to your full satisfaction the first time. You can make yourself comfortable after a pleasant experience while the sub continues to drift in an emotional sea of hope and arousal. After all, you never promised them exactly when they would receive their reward.

2: Sharing the Body

Lucky hole, glory hole, or a box with a hole in the groin area: Reducing a person to their genitalia (or other body parts like mouth or hands) is definitely a powerful way to dominate someone.

Reduce your submissive partner to a small part and simply ignore the rest. The slave doesn't necessarily have the fortune of the Mistress tending to their penis or the Master to the vagina.

The sub can just as easily have the misfortune of being reduced to their rectum or their face. The tongue, however, stays where it is! After all, it's about torment and not enjoyment.

To make the sub's predicament even clearer, the rest of them can be pushed aside: For those who don't want to put a cage with a hole in their bedroom, they can alternatively cut a hole in a sheet. Even a large cardboard box with an opening for a hand, mouth, or something else can be just as effective as a solid piece of furniture.

Don't throw away the packaging if you might be buying a new washing machine soon!

Or act through the wall, or through the door: One submissive man was sent naked out onto the terrace by his wife on a rainy day. From there, he had to pleasure her through the cat flap just with his hand.

One of our interview partners made it even simpler and completely eschewed additional equipment or furniture: She painted the parts of her slave's body with red watercolor that he was allowed to touch her with.

Sometimes, she would only color a tiny spot on his fingertip – maybe two to double the enjoyment. An especially interesting experiment was when she painted a circle on his back.

3: One More Time!

The orgasm as the end and release of a session can easily be taken away from any enchantment: Instead of ending it after that, the question becomes how many more orgasms the submissive partner can have? It continues merrily, even if they already feel completely spent and satisfied.

It can be relaxing for the Dom when the slave must perform this hard work themselves, but it's equally interesting when the submissive can't resist the endless gratification because they've been made completely motionless and have to endure one orgasm after another.

However, it's important to note that for most people, arousal decreases with each orgasm. The next climax takes longer, and the dominant partner may need to use heavy equipment just to reach it at all. You can imagine how much brutality, desperation, and even pain can be involved in such a session.

One woman described herself as so sore and battered that, after her husband drove her to a dozen orgasms without lubricant and with no finesse at all, she couldn't sleep due to adrenaline and pain and could hardly move the next day.

For female subs, an electric toothbrush can help when held directly on the clitoris. And for male subs, endurance electric vibrators are a good option.

Purchase electric-powered massage devices that plug into the wall instead of battery-operated ones. They have more power and last longer than their wireless counterparts.

4: Three, Two, One! None...

The countdown is on! Can the slave bring themselves to orgasm in two minutes? Feel free to adjust the time slightly more or less depending on personal conditions for this stressful exercise.

The time should not be chosen too long for this wicked game, so that haste and nervousness work against the submissive partner. Pressure and eroticism are a very ill-fitting combination that is good for passionate BDSM games.

If the sub fails, the Mistress or Master can postpone the climax by a few hours, days, or even weeks. If you want to make sure the sub doesn't secretly satisfy themselves anyway, combine the game with a chastity belt that prevents any further contact after the futile attempt.

But keep in mind that the models in which the penis is encased in a tube increase the sensitivity of the man over time, because the member experiences no contact. We've heard of male slaves who, after wearing such a cage for a few months, came to orgasm in less than a minute.

To ensure failure, the rules can be changed spontaneously: A woman gave us the tip that she shortens the time if it looks like the slave is about to reach their goal in the given timeframe.

She always gives her husband a countdown that she slowly counts herself. If he is actually approaching climax, she skips a few numbers and ends his masturbation attempt with something like: "Forty-two, three, two, one... Stop!"

5: Small Change Torture

It doesn't always have to be the big program: Two sharp-edged coins can create more pain than a large portion of store-bought nipple clamps.

Clip the desired body part between the two metal discs, compress them, and then slowly peel them away from your victim until it clicks. But be cautious, because inconspicuous small change can easily create sensations in the pliers league.

An advantage over clamps or pliers is that the pressure can be better controlled with coins. The long handles of a tool provide a strong leverage effect and take away the dominant partner's feeling for how much they're compressing the skin, nipples, or other parts of the submissive body.

Several experienced BDSM-players have warned us about pliers for this reason. Bruises or worse can be easily generated, most of it entirely unintentionally.

For these instruments two rules apply: The longer the lever (such as the handle of a plier or hemostat), the greater the difference between actual and perceived pressure – and sheer pain in the end.

Additionally, a physical principle applies: Pressure equals force divided by area. Translated understandably, this means: The smaller the pressed area, the greater the pain. Penny heels hurt more than the large sole of a sandal when they cross the body of the sub.

With the coins, a professional dominatrix flicks over the entire body of certain customers until numerous areas are bruised or even bloody. It looks terrible and feels just as bad.

If you prefer it a bit gentler, you can choose coins with rounder edges or a milled edge (for example, the grippy 50-cent Euro coins in Mainland Europe). Less attractive but significantly gentler are coins when they are defused with tape or with a fluffy paper tissue placed between them.

Even if no blood flows, the repurposed money should be thoroughly cleaned before use. Even after the pandemic is over, any leftover disinfectant can still be put to good use.

A man soldered two coins (two English pennies) to an open metal ring that works like a spring. This makes it easier to handle the small discs. After all, no slave wants to watch the Mistress on all fours searching the floor for lost change.

And that's just the beginning when it comes to putting together a mini-torture chamber: You can read more about these and other tiny devices right in the next section!

6: Where Are My... Key Rings?

Just as mean as the previously mentioned game with coins: key rings can be wonderfully used as clamps for nipples and other pieces of pain-hungry submissive skin.

The pro slides two pencils from the side into a ring and first locks it wide open. This is easier than trying to hold it open with fingers and attach it to the slave at the same time.

Once the nipple (or something else) is inside, the pencils are removed. But be careful: depending on the type and material, the pressure can be extremely strong. And we're not talking about the cheap versions made of soft wire that hang on lockers and bicycle lock keys when purchased.

One lady increases her partner's suffering by increasing the pressure with cable ties while his foreskin was trapped in a large key ring. By moving the ties on the ring (closer to the skin or further away), the torment can be precisely controlled.

With an even larger one, she can also encompass his entire glans below the rim. Weights are often used in such cases as well. But beware: after a few minutes, body parts that are tightly constricted like this turn blue because they're no longer getting blood flow.

If the strength of the rings is too much, you can initially leave them slightly open with the help of the pencils to reduce the pressure. But that's more of a dexterity game, and it often goes awry to the detriment of the slave, with the Top having to (not) apologize for the mishap afterward.

The sharpened tip of a pencil can also easily slip on its own and fall out. "It wasn't me," said a hobby dominatrix when the pencil slipped away and the full force of the ring pressed onto her slave's tongue, causing him to howl like a kicked dog.

He couldn't say much: the ring was trapped behind his tongue piercing and was connected to the knob of the wardrobe door with a leather strap. Extremely dangerous: he jerked so violently due to the sudden pain that he almost tore the ring along with the steel pin from his tongue.

Nevertheless, the rings are extremely practical: to intensify the game further, weights, Christmas tree ornaments, or potted plants can easily be hung from them – also because they hold more securely than most clamps and clips.

7: The Crown

Next is another mini-bad! The worst version of this small but effective torture toy method we've only seen as a viral photo: bottle caps were glued to the insoles of high heels – with the underside facing up, almost cutting the wearer's skin off.

Small, easy to obtain, and practical for use almost anywhere on the body of a pain-hungry masochist. The bottle caps can be attached to nearly anything that comes into contact with the sub. For example, on the seat of a chair, as a nasty surface on a torture bed, or as a small surprise on the saddle during a weekend bike ride.

But please do not attach them on a soft surface; otherwise, the slave would surely be disappointed because the metal cap would be pressed more into the padding than into the skin.

Impact instruments like paddles can also be studded with the caps. However, the rule here is: every strike is a bloody hit!

If you don't want to modify your valuable equipment, simply attach them to a kitchen cutting board (with a handle) or to a wooden strip.

When positioning, be sure to consider where the sharp edges will press against the victim's body. Skin sensitivity varies. Compare the sensation on the top of your hand with the palm. What may feel at most uncomfortable inside can be excruciatingly painful on the outside and can lead to injuries.

Particularly painful positions involve (sensible) bones under the skin. A dominatrix pressed the caps onto the areas above the hip bones of her slave. During the interview in a Hamburg harbor pub, he showed us one of the two star-shaped scars. Because the bottle caps were not properly cleaned before the session, the wounds became infected and oozed for weeks.

Quite creative and practical to take along: with small holes in the metal (use a tiny drill bit on a power drill), the caps can be sewn to the inside of clothing. In the area of the back and buttocks, the slave can be quietly tortured while sitting in a cafe or restaurant.
