It was the last day of school. Jack Miller could barely contain his excitement, as he waited for the school bell. He was looking forward to the holidays. His favorite cousins would be spending it with them. All the excitement, seemed to cause his freckle to flare-up. Jack's freckles worsened despite his efforts to control it. Like always, he had used so much hair spray, that not even a single red hair fell out of place on his freckle covered face. He was a sight, red hair and freckle to match it in his red tee and khaki trouser. Standing in at not much over 5 feet, he could easily be passed as someone much younger than himself.
"Hey Oli" whispered Jack "Time is hardly moving today." Jack whispered to his partner in crime. Bushy brown haired stocky built, Oliver Smith, sat across him in class. "It is still 2pm for the last few hours." Oliver smirked, as he was also thinking the same to himself. Both the boys cast a glance towards George Bigman, the class prankster, sensing it might be his doing. George had fallen victim to the duo’s prank last week. They had removed the screws from George’s chair. The prank went down in history with George going down onto the floor. He fell for it for the third time that year! Literally. This time he had a go at it himself trying to prank others.
George, slim built with an innocent looking face, had gotten his little fingers around the classroom clock earlier that day. He hoped to prank his class once more for the year before their elementary school ended. He had almost succeeded in doing that. Had it not been for Jack's curiosity, George would have succeeded.
Each stare at the clock, confirmed to Jack that it was not working even though Jack had imagined the different times on the clock whenever he looked up at it. Just as Jack was about to tell Oliver about it, the school bell rang signaling the end of class and more importantly, beginning of school holidays.
Nothing mattered anymore, as Jack packed his belongings into his backpack and began leading to form a queue in front. End of year "walk" was a tradition that Jack and his friends had begun ever since they had joined in the first year. It began as a misunderstanding but continued as a tradition. This was one tradition that Jack was happy to perform each and every time.
Miss Emily, their teacher, called out to everyone in her penetrating voice, that sounded above the hustle and bustle of class, to line up in the front just as Jack reached the front of the class. She smiled at how prompt Jack had become all of a sudden. "Have a great holiday everyone. Stay safe for middle school now." She continued, "Jack calm down or you will trip over George's shoe lace dangling near your feet. And George, for the umpteenth time, please tie your shoe laces right now for all our sake".
As George bent down to tie his shoe lace, the bell rang for the kids to move out. This marked the end of the school for the year. George would have been stomped upon by the eager kids wanting to get out of the classroom, had he not quickly gotten up.
Jack rushed outside into the hallway just in time to see Mia, his sister, also rushing out of her classroom. Looking just as excited, Mia's blue eyes were glowing with joy in seeing grade 3 truly over. Jack waved to Mia to meet him outside in the picking zone. That is where their mother, Mrs. Emma Miller, would spot them quickly and not get flagged for holding traffic while waiting for them.
Jack waved bye to Miss Emily and his friends, as he darted towards the door. To avoid getting caught in the rush to get out, Mia was not too far behind him also. As they got out, they saw a familiar looking grey Ford Explorer with a brown haired Mrs. Miller, just turning into the pick up queue. Mrs. Miller spotted Mia, in bright pink jumper with her yellow hair tie bobbing up and down in her strawberry blond hair curls, while making her way towards their designated spot. Sometimes it is a challenge for the hair ties to keep Mia's curly hair on her head and not her face. Mrs. Miller drove to the empty space and Jack jumped into the front seat calling out "Shotgun. Oh,hi mom". Mia meekly opened the back door and climbed in and chimed in "hi mom". She had always been the type to avoid arguments. Jack had the been the type to push for his ways. Mrs. Miller, had now become the type to start holding her breath for the summer camp to begin! "Buckle in, kids" said their mother as she pulled out. Sigh..
Jack quickly connected his music player into the Ford's stereo. Mia sat quietly, looking out the window, wondering what fun awaited them this holiday. If this holiday turns out even half as great as the last, it will be worth it, pondered Mia to herself.
Mrs. Miller quickly filled them in about her list of errands she had to run before they could go home. Mr. Miller would get late finishing up at work as usual.
Mrs. Miller turned into the parking lot to pick up the dry cleaning from one of the shops. She very quickly vanished into the shop and returned with the fresh laundry and plopped it onto the back seat beside Mia. Mia yelled out, "Mom, can we go for ice-cream please while we are here".
Mia knew very well how to get her way with her mum. She looked at her with such adorable eyes that she could not say no to her anytime. She agreed to let Jack and Mia run off to the ice cream shop, just across from where they were parked, while she finished attending to the other errands on her list. Her only condition being,
"Stay out of trouble, both of you", she murmured as she hurried off to do her bidding.
Jack got out of his seat. Loudly declared "Shotgun to infinity" as he shut the door behind him, heading off towards the ice cream parlour with Mia trailing behind.
As Mia and Jack pushed open the huge glass door with "Open" sign dangling from it, a small bell above the door announced their arrival to Mr. James Smith, behind the counter of a cheerfully lit store.
Mr. Smith, turning towards them said, smiling "Ahh, the Millers. Hi Mia. So will it be the usual today or something new?" looking at them from underneath his colorful hat. Then turned to Jack pretending to just have seen him "Hi-Jack, didn't see you there" as he winked to Mia. Jack absolutely despised being greeted as "Hijack" and Mr. Smith knew that well. Their friendly digs at each other never seemed to end. Anna, his daughter who usually helped him in the store after school, beamed at seeing Jack and Mia. Anna chirped up to Mia
"Are you going to be around this holiday?", recalling last holiday how much fun they all had.
Mia replied "It will be even more fun this time, Noah and Rose will be around as well." "Maybe this time we can put Rose on Noah's boat for a change!". "So Rose's Titanic becomes more like Noah's ark."
Both the girls giggled remembering how Noah bumped into Rose's raft and made it crash on the rocks in the middle of the river while raft racing.
Mr. Smith piped in, "Girls, girls, let me finish up here, Mia, would you like your favorite berry ripple with mint chip? Jack has almost finished his rocky road ice cream waiting for you" eyeing Jack, who was busy slurping the melting ice cream from his hand and looking suspiciously at them.
