Epilogue

1.

Well, I just had lost my job! It was one of these situations where the job was great but the environment did not fit me. Yet, it was a very good experience and I would not like to have missed it!

Main Bridge in Miltenberg with the old Toll Gate

It was in the early 90’s of the last century; it sounds like a hundred years ago, doesn’t it? I lived with my American wife Linda near Frankfurt in Germany; about 50 miles Southeast was our little medieval town Miltenberg.

It was nestled in a valley and divided in a Northern and a Southern part by the river Main. The river made a bend and the two parts of Miltenberg were connected by the old sandstone bridge with the old toll gate.

View from our House

We lived in a single home way up high over the town in the Southern part; we rented it from a wealthy couple which lived next to us. The views from up there were wonderful: you could see over the valley past the Main to the other side where a monastery was located in the opposite mountain range. At night, it was lit up.

We had lived there for about two years - and now I was without a job! Not that I was worried too much – but it would take a while to get the “right” new challenge for me. And there was also my overall career goal: I wanted to be the President of a company.

So I started looking, writing a lot of applications, searched the newspapers. In four months, I would turn forty-two. In early 1993, there was no internet yet – it was just about to start but no one had ever heard of this development. So, applications were written and sent by mail.

There were many offers in the papers but one of them from an executive search company in Frankfurt was quite interesting and seemed to fit my expectations, skills and experience.

Three weeks later, I got the appointment!

2.

Their offices were in the center of Frankfurt. I packed my application documents and a few samples of products I had sold in the past, evidence of my experience and skills.

The headhunter was a lady: Ms. Lang. Very professional, middle aged and quite friendly. She led me to a little conference room and we started talking. The questions were typical and around my experience and goals. Nothing unusual but the more I heard about the company, the more I got excited about the position: it was a “Geschaftsfuhrer” job, a President for a smaller American subsidiary with European-wide responsibility. The company was called Autosplice and was located in Nuremberg, a good hundred miles East from Miltenberg. They manufactured contact pins and other electro-mechanical contact- elements and little machines to insert them into PCBs and plastics. The second product line was splice products connecting wires with a little brass clamp. This could be a great fit!

The lady gave me a very positive feedback and I left with a very good feeling – hopefully it works out! This was April six, only a few days after I left my former company!

My wife Linda also liked the opportunity; she just did not really want to move from this wonderful place. We had it perfect here: the view, the privacy, the medieval town, a wonderful environment! Commuting was an option but with sacrifices. It is funny how your mind is going to make plans right away into the future! Well, the job wasn’t mine yet!

The plan was that the Vice President from San Diego would come over within the next weeks and we would meet for a first interview. “Keep your fingers crossed” I said to Linda after I returned home and told her all about it.

Nevertheless, I did not stop writing more applications – you never know how even the most exciting opportunity turns out!

3.

Three weeks later, the invitation was in the mail! Great! I would meet the guy who would be my new boss. His name was Richard A. Hudzik, VP and CFO of the San Diego based Company. Next Friday, we would meet in the headhunter’s office in Frankfurt. I was ready!
