Jan van Scorel was a Flemish artist from the northern part of the Netherlands who is one of the leading figures of the romanticism movement in the Flemish Renaissance painting. Undoubtedly, his great style and technique were influenced by the famous Italian masters of the epoch, whose work he was well acquainted with in his journeys and his life in Italy. Remarkably to van Scorel it is that he did not receive initial training as an artist in the Netherlands and formed his artistic taste and style under the influence of Italian masters, particularly strong this influence was by Raphael. Achieved popularity and glory in young years in Florence and proved to be a zealous Christian with his visit to the Holy Land of Jerusalem, van Scorel was spotted by Pope Adrian VI and appointed by him as a Vatican painter.

Here he painted several portraits of the Pope and church altars, but most importantly, he had the opportunity to study in detail the style of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.
Upon his return to the Netherlands, Jan van Scorel settled down to live and work in Utrecht, where he built his own master studio and school. It is here that he developed the most the knowledge learned by the Italian masters, especially the Venetian school. He painted altars and paintings on the order of the church, but also canvas with a mythological storyline.
Characteristic of his style and palette was the fresh and brilliant bright colors, which bequeathed as a palette and way of seeing to generations of Flemish artists after him, the most notable of which is without a doubt, was Peter Paul Rubens.
Towards the end of his relatively long and fruitful artistic life, the artist moved to live and work in Ghent, where he died in 1562 at the age of 67.
