John Constable (1776 - 1837) has become best known for his landscapes painted in Dedham Vale, the place where he spent his life. The artist was born in Suffolk, and was heavily attached to his native land, which is why almost all of his landscapes are devoted to places from there. During his lifetime and career as an artist, he did not have many commissions and had a shortage of financial funds, although after his death, collectors were buying his paintings at high prices and every museum or gallery considered very prestigious to have them in their collections. In fact, Constable was not even popular among the aristocracy and the higher society, and only after he was admitted to the Royal Academy, which happened in his too old age, he became known as an artist. It is paradoxical that his work was more popular in France than in his native England. Moreover, the paintings of Constable inspire French artists from the so-called Barbizon school.

Constable's method of painting landscapes was strictly specific - he first painted large-scale oil sketch paintings, and then painted his finished landscape paintings in his studio on the basis of these preliminary sketches. Many critics today see more artistic merit in his sketches than in his finely-painted large paintings. His sketches are inspired and spontaneous, full of improvisation and life. The artist has left us series of magnificent sketches of skies.
As a real explorer, he had put his notes on the atmospheric conditions of his pencil and watercolor drawings so that he could then use the data given in his finished paintings and give them credibility. Characteristic of his oil painting sketches are the fast and bold brush strokes, his striving was to capture the instant changes of light and movement, which bring him closer to the Impressionist manner. Even the landscapes made in his studio seem to be flooded with the light.
The artist was also an unsurpassed master of fast improvisation with watercolors.
