Foreword

Otto van Veen is a painter, master of the drawings and a humanist, mostly active in Antwerp and Brussels at 16th and the beginning of the seventeenth century. He was famous for managing a large studio in Antwerp, which produces multiple emblems and coats of arms, and that he was a teacher of Peter Paul Rubens. His role as a classically educated humanist has strongly influenced the young Rubens, who later took on this role.

He was born around 1556 in Leiden, where his father was a Burgomaster. He studied for many artists for a while before leaving for Rome around 1575. Van Veen remained there for about five years, and maybe he studied in Rome with Federico Zuccari.

Van Veen then worked in the royal palaces of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II and William V in Munich before returning to the Netherlands. In Brussels, he was a painter of the governor of the South of the Netherlands until 1592 and then acted in Antwerp.

After becoming a master of St. Luke's Guild in 1593, he was making numerous orders for church decorations, including altars for the Antwerp Cathedral and a chapel at the Town Hall. The artist also organized his studio and workshop, which included Rubens. Later, the artist served as dean in two prominent organizations in the city, the Guild of St. Lucas in 1602 and the novelists in 1606.

His later paintings include a series of twelve paintings depicting the battles of the Romans and the Batavians based on engravings that he has already published on the subject. Otto van Veen had two brothers who were also artists. His daughter Gertruid was also an artist. Otto van Veen dies in Brussels.

Van Veen is one of the most impressive artists and scientists of his time. He was mostly involved in the design of emblems and coats of arms. In all of these works, Van Veen's skills are shown as a painter and scientist humanist.

In the seventeenth century, his work Amorum emblemata became one of the most influential books of his epoch, functioning not only as a model for other Dutch and foreign emblem artists as well a base of inspiration for many artists from other areas. Some of these emblems are relevant today, as was the seventeenth-century audience.
